Obituary

Charles (Tom) E. Thompson, USMC CWO4, Retired, passed away on November 18, 2018.  Tom is survived by his wife, Anne Fleming Thompson of Athens, Alabama; his former wife, Cecile Thompson of Huntsville, AL; his son, Anthony Thompson (Katie), Huntsville, Alabama; daughters, Wendy Eastman (Mike), Parsonsfield, Maine and Renee' Thompson, Huntsville, Alabama; Step brothers, Chris Mogan, Rockland, Maine and Michael Mogan (Beth), Scarborough, Maine; step children, Elizabeth Harrison, Huntsville, AL and Donna (Ricky) Discenza, Covington, GA; Grandchildren, David Drew (Annick) Chesapeake, VA, and Aly Eastman, Parsonsfield, ME; Allie Thompson and Benjamin Thompson, Huntsville, AL; Darian Discenza and Nico Discenza, Covington, GA; and great grandchildren, Kaylee and Brady Drew, Chesapeake, VA.

Tom was born in Brewer, Maine, December 18, 1939 to Charles Woodrow Thompson and Dorothy Louise Harvey Thompson.

He grew up in Bangor, Maine, and graduated from Bangor High School in May, 1958.  He received an Associate's Degree from Calhoun Community College, Athens, Alabama.

After graduation from High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving 15 years as an enlisted man and 15 years as an Officer.  He began his service on July 3, 1958 at Parris Island, South Carolina.  As a Marine, he served in Japan, Africa, Lebanon, Italy, Norway, Spain, Greece, France, Arctic Divide, Gibraltar, Jordan, Sicily and Viet Nam.

During his service time, he attained several belts in martial arts and earned multiple awards and medals.

His final tour of duty was at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama where he was responsible for fielding the Modular Universal Laser Equipment (MULE) in support of the HELLFIRE missile for the Marine Corps.

He retired in Huntsville, Alabama in July 1988.

Tom was an avid sports fan.  He played on the Marine Corps Handball Team, and received awards for excellence in the sport over many years.  He also played golf and participated in tournaments up and down the Eastern Seaboard.  In recent years, he was a member of the Redstone Arsenal Golf Club, and the Alabama Golf Association.

He was a lifetime member of the Brandon Wilbourn Detachment of the Marine Corps League.

The family will receive friends on Sat., Dec, 8, 2018, 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Berryhill Funeral Home followed by the Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. with Chaplain Cleveland King.
