Lay
December 6, 1947 – June 15, 2025
Alan Fred Lay (Al), 77, of Huntsville, AL, passed away comfortably in his home on June 15, 2025. He was born in Colebrook, NH, on December 6, 1947, and was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Lay and mother, Norma Young.
Alan is survived by his wife Ann Lay; children: Tracy Lay (Kimberly), and Joshua Lay; stepchildren: Thomas Havens and Jamie Hughes (Cody); and grandchildren Joseph Lay, Andrew Lay, and Cora Havens.
He was a veteran of the United States Army. After volunteering in 1968, he served two tours in Vietnam, once in 1969 and then again in 1971 as ground personnel for the 1st Cavalry Division.
In 1978 he relocated to Redstone Arsenal, AL where he supported HAWK Missile. He was relocated to Wurzburg, Germany in 1979 in support of the Cold War, where he remained until returning to Redstone Arsenal in 1983 to become an instructor at Toftoy Hall. After 21 years in service, Alan retired as a Seargent First Class in 1989.
He continued to work at Redstone Arsenal for various government contractors supporting AMRDEC building 5400. Upon retiring again in 2006 he continued his love of coin collecting and became an avid coin dealer/broker, traveling around the southeast with his passion. He
enjoyed the outdoors and loved fishing, hunting, skeet shooting, and reloading ammunition. With his loud booming voice, Al was always the center of attention at gatherings and enjoyed playing card games with friends and family whenever he could.
Currently no services are planned, but the family is preparing a Celebration of Life, details to be announced later.
