ALFRED ANN NUNN TRENTHAM

July 29 , 1940 – June 10,2026

 Alfred Ann Trentham, 85, of Huntsville, AL, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. She was born July 29, 1940, in Trion, GA, the eldest daughter of the late Robert Jesse Nunn and Georgia Helen Earp Nunn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Norman Ed Trentham; sister Virginia Lee Nunn Clayton; brother-in-law Charles Clayton; sister-in-law Avanell Trentham Best and Glenna Sue Trentham; brothers-in-law Harold Best, Gerald Trentham, and Larry Trentham; and her in-laws Edabee and Mildred Burdett Trentham.

She is survived by her daughter Susan Trentham, Ph.D., of Tucson, AZ; son Steve Trentham of Meridianville, AL; granddaughter Andrea Trentham of Meridianville, AL; daughter-in-law Michelle Smith Trentham of Meridianville, AL; brother-in-law Troy Trentham of Atlanta, GA, nieces Pam Clayton Pettyjohn (and husband Kent Pettyjohn) of Rossville, GA, and Bethany Best Barfield (and husband Greg Barfield) of Pensacola, FL; r nephews Dennis Clayton (and wife Wendy Clayton) of Eustis, FL, Ron Best (and wife Jana Best) of Cairo, GA, and Kris Trentham of Pensacola, FL; several great nieces and nephews; and her dear friend and confidant Anne Lewis of Huntsville, AL, with whom she shared daily check-in calls for years.

 Although born in Trion, GA, her family moved to Chattanooga, TN when she was very young, and that is where she lived during her childhood up to her early twenties. She graduated from City High School in May 1958. Her first job was as a Clerk-Typist at Provident Insurance Company, starting just two days after graduating from high school. A year later, she went to work as a Clerk-Steno Typist at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for five years. TVA is also where she met her future husband, Ed Trentham, in September 1959, when he began working at the same office as a Co-op student. They married in October 1963 and enjoyed nearly 48 years of marriage before Ed passed in August 2011.

In their early years of marriage, Ed and Ann lived in Auburn, AL for a couple of years. While Ed completed his B.S. degree in industrial engineering, Ann worked as a Secretary for the Coordinator or Research at Auburn University and typed students’ papers on the side. When Ed completed his degree in 1966, they moved to Huntsville, AL, which became their lifelong home, except for three and a half years living on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands from 1982 to 1985.

In Huntsville, AL, she worked as a Secretary of Facility Engineering for IBM for four years until a month before her first child was born. While raising her two children, Ann was a homemaker, who was actively involved in the PTA, as well as her children's school and extracurricular activities. She also taught play school part-time at Weatherly Heights Baptist Church (WHBC) in the early 1980s before moving to Kwajalein.  Ann returned to the workforce while on Kwajalein and was Secretary for the Site Manager at GTE for three years. Her work commute was quite unique as the GTE office was on Roi Namur, an adjacent island, and she flew 30 minutes one-way on a small plane each weekday morning and evening to return home throughout those three years.

Returning to Huntsville, AL after island life, Ann began her Boeing years in 1986 with the Space Shuttle Return to Flight contract for the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Director for Boeing Aerospace Operations (BAO), moving to the initial International Space Station (ISS) contract with The Boeing Company/Huntsville. She worked for the Director for Safety and Mission Assurance on ISS for 10 years, working for several directors during that time. She finished her Boeing career with the Models and Simulations Group and then the Defense Programs group, retiring in February 2003, after 17 years with Boeing.

Ann did not slow down after retirement; she enjoyed short trips to various locations with Ed, overcame some serious health challenges, and became Ed's devoted caretaker for several years.  Ann further increased her volunteer work with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Weatherly Heights Baptist Church (WHBC) .

Ann was a member of the Hunt's Spring Chapter of the DAR and was very proud of her work with the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Grant, AL, for which she was recognized by the Alabama State DAR organization. She worked for years on family genealogy and found and met many relatives while doing research on her and Ed's families.

At WHBC, Ann was an instrumental fundraiser for yearly Christmas gifts for the Baptist Children's Home in Decatur and further served as an active volunteer of yearly rummage sales that benefited the organization. She was also a founder of the current WHBC Congregational Care Committee, which began as a card-writing program for members who were home bound, sick, or grieving. In the span of seven or eight years, Ann wrote and sent thousands of cards to WHBC members, expressing concern, support, and care. Ann was also a kind and supportive friend to many within the Huntsville community at large.

Over the years, Ann made hundreds of gifts for family, friends, and acquaintances with her mastery level skills at cross-stitching which many will cherish for years to come.

A memorial service for Mrs. Alfred Ann Trentham will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Weatherly Heights Baptist Church (1306 Cannstatt Dr SE Huntsville, AL). Family, friends, and acquaintances are invited to join us as we honor and celebrate her life.  A reception for all attendees will follow at the Church Lighthouse. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Legacy Table Endowment of WHBC that funds community missions and ministries, or to your favorite charity.
