Ann Yarbrough Smith was born January 20, 1954 to Clayton Edward and Annie Ruth Yarbrough in Athens, AL. She graduated from East Limestone High School in 1972 and then from Athens State College in 1976. She met Richard Vernon Smith at Athens State and they married just after graduation. They had two children: Charles and Carolyn.
Ann earned a Master's in Education and an Education Specialist Degree, both from Alabama A&M. She spent her life teaching Business Education to middle school and high school students in the Huntsville City School system. After retirement, she stayed busy volunteering at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church in the choir, Ladies Sodality, Meals on Wheels, Mental Health Center, and the Catholic Center of Concern. She also volunteered for the Community Free Dental Clinic, the Huntsville City School Academic Teams, and the Linus Project. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the international organization for teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma. When she was not busy volunteering, she was busy sewing, quilting, caring for everyone around her, and cheering on her grandkids.
Ann passed away at home from heart failure on Saturday, April 18, 2020. She was proceeded in death by her husband of 43 years, Richard, who passed away last June. She is survived by her son, Charles Smith (wife Margarete); grandchildren Clayton, Abigail, and Peter; daughter Carolyn Ponce (husband Dario); brother Don Yarbrough (wife Trudi); sister Yvonne Chadick (husband Bill); brother-in-law Robert Smith; sister-in-law Anna Oswald (husband Mark); three nieces; two nephews; and two great-nephews.
At this time, the family is planning a Visitation at Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville, AL on Saturday, April 25th from 2:00-4:00 pm. In accordance with COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, the funeral home will accommodate 10 people to rotate through at a time.
Please know that the family recognizes the importance of staying home, and encourages all who desire to simply tune in for the ending prayer, an on-line Rosary, which will take place at 4:00pm. The video will be available for live viewing and will remain available for days after.
The funeral Mass in celebration of Ann's life will take place at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church in the months to come - after this pandemic eases.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church Building Fund or the Community Free Dental Clinic in Huntsville, AL.
