IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Belton "Gil"
Gilreath Aldrich
April 15, 1933 – May 4, 2025
Belton Gilreath "Gil" Aldrich, age 92, of Decatur, Alabama, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on May 4, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and servant to his community and country, Gil lived a life marked by service, faith, and love.
Born on April 15, 1933, to George Dewey Aldrich and Ora Mayville Aldrich, Gil (lovingly known as "Papa" to his family) was raised with strong values and a deep sense of purpose. He proudly served his country as a medic in the U.S. Air Force and later as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Reserves.
Following his military service, Gil earned a degree in radiologic technology from UAB and began his professional journey at Huntsville Hospital. He later received degrees in Physical Education and Biology from Athens State College and in Administrative Science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His career in education included coaching and teaching at West Morgan High School, and serving as Principal of Flint Elementary School, where he left a lasting impact on countless students and families. He concluded his career at the Tennessee Valley Authority, contributing to the region's development and growth. He was also the proud former owner of City Cafe in downtown Decatur.
His passion for shaping the future extended beyond his career—he dedicated several years as Chairman of the Planning Commission for the City of Decatur, thoughtfully guiding community growth.
A man of deep faith, Gil was a longtime member and Deacon at Central Park Baptist Church, where he served faithfully and found joy in fellowship.
Gil is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Vonda Nelms Aldrich; two daughters, LeAnne Aldrich (John Templeton) and Abby Lamon (Tolly Lamon); his grandchildren Clay Sanders, Alex Templeton (Zack Walsh), Mallory Bryan (Von Bryan), and Dakota Lamon (Macie Randolph); great-grandson Jack Bryan; his sister Jenny Aldrich; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Zane Aldrich Henderson; his great-granddaughter Olivia Young; paternal grandparents Barbara Terrel Aldridge and John Aldridge; and maternal grandparents Luticia Norton Linville and John Clay Linville.
Gil loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He was also a devoted fan of Alabama football and rarely missed a chance to cheer on the Atlanta Braves.
His life was a testament to quiet strength, enduring love, and unwavering dedication to those he cared for. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Visitation and funeral service will be held at Central Park Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. with the funeral immediately following.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
