Obituary

Benny Lee Medlen, Sr, lovingly known as Popeye, passed away on November 28, 2025 surrounded by his family in Huntsville, AL.

Benny was born on February 13, 1933 in Owens Cross Road, AL to Oscar Hunley and Geneva Gertrude Medlen. He was the youngest of 6 siblings. He was a graduate of New Hope High School. While serving in the United States Air Force in Long Island, New York, he met the love of his life, Joan Miller. They were married in New York before moving back to Owens Cross Roads. Upon returning to Owens Cross Road he worked for Meadow Gold Dairies before purchasing a Dry Cleaners in the early 1960s. He ran a successful business operating up to 9 stores at one time before retiring at the age of 83. As his sons were growing up you could find him coaching football, basketball and baseball through the different seasons.  He touched many lives helping coach a variety of teams. As he had grandchildren and great-grandchildren you would find him at their different school, sporting and dance events. In his younger days he enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was a big fan of Atlanta Braves baseball and enjoyed going to their games when he could. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Huntsville.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joan Medlen; Three sons: Benny (Karen) Medlen Jr, Fred (Carol) Medlen and Michael (Ginger) Medlen; Seven Grandchildren: Karen (Kai) Langford, Lindsey (Michael) Tincher, Colby (Caroline) Medlen, Kelly (Joey) Runnels, Kristy (Benjamin) Edwards, Courtney Medlen and Caroline (Wesley) Smith; Eight Great Grandchildren - Cristian, Brody, Abigail, Rosalee, Caleb, Wheeler, Kaveri and Winston; and a host of nephews and nieces and those that loved him like family.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, siblings and great-granddaughter Avery.

Visitation will be Sunday December 7, 2025 from 12:00pm until 2:00pm at Berryhill Funeral Home followed by a chapel service at 2:00pm with Pastor Mary Miller officiating.  Graveside service will follow at Green Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the North Alabama Alzheimer's Association.
