IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Jean
Gaylor
September 17, 1939 – March 1, 2026
Betty Jean Gaylor, age 86, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026. Born on September 17, 1939, in Aurora, Alabama. Betty later made her home in Huntsville, where she spent her adult life building a legacy of faith, service, and community.
A devoted member of Huntsville Park Baptist Church, Betty faithfully served in the church choir and lived out her faith daily. She graduated as valedictorian from Walnut Grove and carried that same dedication and excellence into everything she pursued throughout her life.
Betty was a proud and active member of Beta Sigma Phi. She retired from Huntsville Utilities and Sears, but retirement never suited her for long. She later worked as a secretary at Lamar and Associates. Betty loved to work and found purpose in staying busy and contributing wherever she could.
Her dedication to Huntsville extended far beyond her career. She served her community faithfully through the Huntsville City Beautification Board and the Green Team, always striving to make her city a better and more beautiful place. She was a beloved and familiar presence throughout the community.
Betty was fiercely independent, outspoken, and strong-willed. If asked how she was doing, she was always "fine and blessed". She never met a stranger and made friends everywhere she went. Her personality filled every room, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Of all the things she loved, mowing grass was her favorite. She often joked that if there are chores in heaven, she hopes she gets to mow God's lawn. That simple joy perfectly reflected her servant's heart and her love for tending to the world around her.
She is survived by her son, Larry Gaylor; her grandchildren, Sabrina Austin and Zachary Gaylor; her great-grandchildren, Breanna Austin, Blake Lamb, and Mason Gaylor; and her great-great-grandchildren, Dastin Austin, Xadyn Austin, and Koda Brookins.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, "Big Mama" Alice Walden; her mother, Marie Dixon; her sister, Jackie Gunnells; and her daughter-in-law, Lora Gaylor.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 5th at Berryhill Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Huntsville Memory Gardens at 12:30 p.m. The service will be officiated by Jimmy Lay.
Betty's life was one of faith, hard work, service, and deep love for her family and community. Her legacy will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
