Betty Brown Phelps, age 92, of Meridianville, Alabama, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Everyone who knew Betty described her as one of the sweetest and kindest people they had ever met, a quality she graciously maintained throughout her life, even in her final days.
Betty worked as a telephone operator at military installations across the country, faithfully supporting her family wherever her husband of 65 years, Richard Phelps, was stationed during his service in the United States Air Force. Growing up on a rural Alabama farm, she dreamed of seeing the world beyond the fields she called home. Through her marriage, her beloved husband helped make those dreams a reality, sharing adventures, distant places, and experiences she had long imagined. In one of the most meaningful expressions of her love and gratitude, the last words she said to him before his passing were: “You showed me things I always wanted to do and took me to faraway places I had dreamed about while living on the farm.”
Betty found great happiness in tending the flowers around her home. The carefully maintained beds reflected her gentle and caring spirit, and neighbors frequently praised the beauty of her flowers throughout the seasons.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Phelps, and her son, Shane Phelps.
Betty leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: her daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Al Apice and Lisa and Terry McGill; her daughter-in-law, Hydi Phelps Hendrickson; and her grandchildren, Stephanie Boozer (Jonathan), Monica Apice, Lana Apice, Jesse McGill, Macie Larsen (Taylor), Ryan McGill, Allyson Sellers (Levi), April Baker (Kolton), and Rosie Phelps.
She is also survived by her thirteen great-grandchildren: Delaney Boozer, Emerson Boozer, Beckett Boozer, Aden Wilson, Logan Wilson, Ryley Wilson, Caleb Apice (Bailey), Carson Butler, Paisley Butler, Mila Sellers, Harvey Sellers, Wyatt Baker, and one great-grandchild on the way, Baby Larsen. Betty was also blessed with one great-great-grandchild, Millie Apice. Betty shared a special bond with her six sisters and six brothers. Their close relationship was a source of strength, laughter, and cherished memories throughout her life. Despite life's changes and challenges, they remained devoted to one another and treasured the time they spent together.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at Berryhill Funeral Home from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. Funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 pm in the chapel with Ryan McGill officiating. Burial will follow at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
In honor of Betty's memory, expressions of sympathy may be shared through flowers or memorial donations to Gentiva Hospice. "Well done, good and faithful servant." Matthew 25:23
