Billie Joyce Mixon Long, 92, of Huntsville, passed away September 20, 2025. She was born in Meridian, Ms. and graduated from Suqualena (MS) High School. She received her B.S. In Psychology with high honors from UAH, the same year her daughter graduated from Grissom High School in 1972. She received her MS in Psychology from Alabama A&M.
She worked with kids at the Butler Terrace Methodist Service Center, helped start the Huntsville Opportunity Center for the Elderly (which became the Senior Center), helped start Meals on Wheels, and helped to bring Goodwill Industries to Huntsville. She taught Sunday School, from Preschool to older adults, at Latham UMC, was the Adult Leader of the Youth Group at Latham, and became the first female lay leader in the Huntsville District of the UMC. She was the Executive Director of Chi-Ho Mansion Children's Home for 28 years, giving care to over 3,000 abused, abandoned, and neglected children.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Vacie Lee MacAdams Mixon, father, Austin Mixon; brothers Jonas, Vernon, and David; sister Elsie Clarice Harmon; and daughter Sharon Topping (Michael). She is survived by her son, Michael Long (Debra), granddaughter Michelle Team (Ben), great-grandsons Jeremy, Jack, and Charlie Gilstrap, and nephew David Wade Mixon (Pegy).
A celebration of her life will take place at Holmes St. UMC on Sunday, October 5th at 2 PM. She will be interred in Suqualena, MS. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to UMCOR, First Stop, or Holmes St. UMC.
