It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bruce Collins Nichols, Jr. on September 16, 2026 at age 76. Born on October 3, 1949 in Calera, Alabama, son of the late Mary Jackson Nichols and Bruce Collins Nichols, Sr. He was a devoted husband of 37 years, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Bruce was a dedicated and accomplished educator and coach for 39 years. He received his Masters of Science in Education from Jacksonville State University, where he was a four year starter on the football team. He was a two-time all conference player and a 1971 NAIA/Associated Press Little All-American. He actually could have received Little All-American recognition in his junior season, but he asked not to be considered so other seniors could receive recognition. That was who Bruce was, always putting others before himself. He enjoyed spending time with his family and cooking for those he loved; His homemade breakfast, Thanksgiving dressing, and pies will be remembered forever. He was a man who spoke honestly and confidently, was quick witted, and could make anyone laugh unexpectedly.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Whelpley Nichols, children Brad Collins Nichols (Helen), Mary Catherine Nichols, Collin Ann Nichols, Hannah Leigh Nichols, and grandchildren Elaina Nichols Ballow (Josh) and Corbin Collins Nichols, who were the lights of his life. He is also survived by his sisters Nancy Benton (Bill) , Joyce Newman, brother-in-law Jerry Morgan, and many nieces and nephews. Bruce was preceded in death by his sisters Jane Nichols, Jeannette Morgan, and brother-in-law Donnie Newman.

He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

Bruce’s Celebration of Life will be held on September 21, 2026, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Berryhill Funeral Home, 2305 N Memorial Pkwy, Huntsville, AL35810. A service will immediately follow. Please dress comfortably and casually, just as Bruce would want.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Russell Hill Cancer Foundation, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in honor of Bruce Collins Nichols Jr.
