Calvin Jones Brown, 64, of Tuscaloosa passed away Monday, September 18, 2023 at UAB Hospital.
He was born on October 21, 1958 in Decatur, Alabama to Paul J. "Bud" and Martha Kilgore Brown. Calvin spent the majority of his life in Decatur as an active member of the community while raising his family there.
He was president and a partner in West Ellis Investment Management Inc. in Decatur from 1994 until 2009 when he joined BlueCreek Investment Partners. Previously, he was an investment analyst and portfolio manager for Management Advisory Group Inc. in Decatur and owes much of his success during his 28-year business career to the late Raymon Baker. Calvin was active in First United Methodist Church of Decatur, where he served as a member of the board of trustees, chair of the administrative board, chair of the stewardship campaign and Sunday School/Bible Study teacher for senior high youth and young adults for many years.
His extensive civic and community involvement includes serving as a board member for the Morgan County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Alabama Humanities Foundation, BankFirst, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Mental Health Association of Morgan County, Rotary Club of Decatur, Parents and Children Together, Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority and Princess Theatre. In his spare time, Calvin was an avid cyclist and devoted fan of all things Crimson Tide.
Most recently, he has served as the Assistant Vice President, Director of Alumni Affairs at the University of Alabama. He began his career at The University in 2011 after being an active member of the National Alumni Association since he graduated from the Capstone in 1983. Calvin was the President of the National Alumni Association, the Vice President of the National Alumni Association, he was on the Steering Committee for the University of Alabama Capital Campaign and University Libraries, he was a board member and chairman of the Library Leadership Board, a board member of the Planned Giving Advisory Committee and a board member of Capstone Village.
Calvin is preceded in death by his parents, Paul J. "Bud" and Martha Kilgore Brown.
He is survived by his brother, Jeffrey L. Brown (Bebe); Judy Collier Brown; his children, Julia Brown Agnew (Martin) and Paul J. "Pete" Brown III (Anna Sara); three grandchildren, Collier Frances Agnew, Charles Christian "Charlie" Agnew, and Paul J. "Jones" Brown IV.
The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church, in Decatur, on Sunday, September 24, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with The Reverend Alex Beaube and The Reverend Ken Dunivant officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Dick Wilder, Pat Hennessy, Doug Hamilton, Keith Frost, Steve Smith, Paul Stanley, Drew Stanley, and Jimmy Warren.
The family would like to thank the medical team of the Cardiac Care Unit/ICU at UAB Hospital for their devoted care of our father. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Calvin J. Brown Endowed Scholarship Fund in the UA National Alumni Association.
