Calvin Eugene (Gene) Thames, 100, of Toney, Alabama, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on December 7, 2025.
Mr. Thames was born December 19, 1924, in Coffee Springs, Alabama, to the late John Thomas and Maggie Thames.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Effie Thames; son, Buster Thames; grandson, Ron Creech; and 12 siblings.
He is survived by his son, David Thames; daughter, Rena Creech; daughter, Cassandra Bauman (Ricky); grandsons, Jarad Creech and Wesley Bauman; great-grandson, Evan Creech; sister, Janice Drzewicki; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thames graduated from Coffee Springs High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving as a communication specialist during World War II. He later served one year as a communication specialist during the Korean War. In 1949, he completed one year of study in electronics at Port Arthur College, Port Arthur, Texas, and earned his amateur (ham) radio license. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Troy University in 1952, holding Class A Superintendent and Class A Alabama Teaching certifications. In 1953, he received a Master of Science degree in education from Auburn University, where he was awarded a research fellowship, appointed as a staff member, and inducted into Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. He completed additional coursework toward a doctorate. Beginning in 1953, Mr. Thames enjoyed a distinguished 30-year civilian career at Redstone Arsenal, rising through positions that included electronic training supervisor, division deputy (revising missile-related manuscripts), project manager for technical correspondence on missiles and munitions, chief of the Literature Support Division, senior technical specialist, and senior engineering writer. Following retirement from civil service, he continued working as a contractor with Rockwell International (publication analyst, Space Shuttle projects), Teledyne Brown Engineering (senior technical specialist, missile system maintenance manuals), and Sperry Corporation (senior engineering writer).
A lifelong learner and educator, Gene Thames inspired countless individuals throughout his century of life. He will be remembered for his deep love of family, steadfast faith, and the countless stories drawn from his rich experiences.
A military graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Maple Hill Cemetery, with Berryhill Funeral Home officiating.
