Carl Mervyn Roberts 

October 17, 1938 – August 7, 2026

Carl Mervyn Roberts, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama, surrounded by family, including his children Ramona, Carl, and Michael.

Carl was born October 17, 1938, in Brooks, Maine, to Charles Roberts and B. Arlene Roberts. He grew up in the Brooks, Belfast, and Bangor areas of Maine and was one of eight children.

At just 17 years old, Carl enlisted in the United States Army, beginning a military career that would span 20 years. He attained the rank of E-6 and worked in supply. His Army career took him far from his beginnings in Maine, including service in Korea and Vietnam.

Carl and Helga M. Roberts shared four children: James David “Jim” Roberts, Carl Mervyn Roberts, Ramona “Mona” Wilson, and Michael Christopher Roberts. Helga passed away in 2023.

Carl had nine grandchildren: Cameron Garrett Roberts, Brittany Desiree, Lauren Alexander, Shelby Scott Wilson, Olivia Grace Wilson, Colten John Roberts, Austin Jack Roberts, Michael Christopher Roberts, and Christopher Roberts.

Carl was preceded in death by his son, James David “Jim” Roberts; his brother, Cecil; and his sisters, Marilyn and Margie. He is survived by his children, Ramona “Mona” Wilson, Carl Mervyn Roberts, and Michael Christopher Roberts; and his four sisters, Linda, Joanne, Becky, and Cindy.

Carl was fiercely independent and lived life very much on his own terms. He held strong convictions, particularly about hard work and personal responsibility. Yet there was also a part of Carl that was deeply concerned about people in need. He was an avid blood donor and volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels. He had a particular concern for the poor, the less fortunate, and sick children. These quiet acts of service were an important part of the man he was.

Carl loved to play tennis and enjoyed following his favorite sports teams. He was an Alabama football fan and a devoted Boston Red Sox fan. He loved country music, the oldies but goodies, and a good slow dance whenever he was able.

A Maine native at heart, Carl never lost his appreciation for a good Maine lobster. He was also particularly fond of salmon, which seemed to find its way onto his plate at nearly every meal. And Carl enjoyed gambling and making trips to Tunica, Mississippi—one of the more colorful and memorable pleasures of his life.

Carl was a man of strong opinions, independence, determination, and complexity. He lived a long life on his own terms, and those who knew him will remember him through their own stories and memories.
