Charles Steven Watts, 77, passed away at home in Harvest, Alabama, on August 29, 2026. He was born on April 26, 1949, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Steve served his country for 20 years in the United States Army and continued his career as a defense contractor and educator for 15 years before retiring. His passion for military history and his love for engaging friends, family, and strangers alike in thoughtful conversation inspired his purposeful career.

He enjoyed books, movies, going to the rifle range, spending time in the pool, and playing games of all kinds, especially those involving strategy. He loved to travel and his work brought him to many different countries. He was happiest at the beach, either reading under an umbrella or boogie boarding the waves. He doted on his cats, Max and Moose.

Steve will be remembered and loved by those who knew him best. He is survived by his wife, Ann Watts; his daughters, Michele Vogt and Debbie Vaughan, and Debbie’s husband, Brandon; his grandchildren, Meredith Vaughan, Tyler Patterson, Audrey Vaughan, and Anna Patterson; and his brothers, Michael Watts and his wife, Nancy, and Scott Watts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Opel Watts.

Steve leaves behind a life of service and a dedication to his family and hobbies. He was unique, intelligent, and friendly. He will be incredibly missed by all who had the blessing of knowing him and remembered for his good-heartedness and love of learning.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
