Obituary

Dr. Clyde Riley passed away on September 4, 2025, at South Hampton Skilled Nursing Home.  Clyde was born on February 19, 1939, in Niagara Falls, New York, son of Catherine Forbes Riley and Warren D. Riley.  He is survived by his wife, Patricia Croll Riley; sons, Timothy Shawn Riley (Leslie) and Christopher Clyde Riley (Carla); granddaughter, Savannah Riley; grandsons Gavin Riley (Lauren), Garett Riley (Emily), Great Granddaughter Madeline, brother Bob Riley, sister-n-law Sally Aversano, brother-in-law Doug Croll, and nephews and nieces.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty Balodis, and brothers Warren and John Riley.

Dr. Riley earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Rochester in 1960. He was a member of the football team there and a member of the TKE Fraternity. After marrying in 1961, Clyde and Pat moved to Florida, lived in Alumni Village, and in 1964 he earned a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Florida State University. After leaving Florida State, they moved to Madison, Wisconsin where he    did Postdoctoral work on Molecular Beams at the University of Wisconsin until 1967.

Dr. Riley started his career as a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1967, was Department Chairman for many years, and received numerous awards during his tenure. He also served as Athletics Assistant Advisor for several years.  After 33 years, he retired.

Clyde was always active in sports, hunting, fishing, bicycling, weightlifting, boating, and slaloming his red Sunbeam Tiger. He earned a black belt in Taekwondo under Master Lee and was a member of the YMCA where he enjoyed the Spinning classes.


In his retirement, he especially enjoyed attending his grandsons' ice hockey games, family visits at our lakehouse, family dinners, vacation cruises, trips to Niagara Falls to see our best friends Earl and Carol and going to Car Shows with his sons and Grandsons.

A Celebration of Life will be held this summer in Niagara Falls, New York, his birthplace. He will be forever missed.
