Obituary

Cynthia"Cyndi" Ray Swinea, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on October 18, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on December 21, 1957, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Barbara Christine (Pate) and'Robert Ray. Just days later, she left the hospital on Christmas Day-a moment that seemed to spark her lifelong love of the Christmas season.

Cyndi grewup in Knoxville, surrounded by the warmth of family. Her maternal grandparents were Ruby Lee (Davis) Pateand Troy Boles, and her paternal grandparents were Margaret Elizabeth (Owens) and Jones W. Ray, all of Knoxville. In 1965, the family moved to Huntsville, Alabama. Except for her college years and a period living in Nashville, Cyndi made Huntsville her lifelong home. She experienced the loss of her father in 1979, a profound moment that shaped her resilient spirit.

In May 1984, Cyndi married her high school sweetheart, Rick Swinea, whom she actually met in the 4th grade. Together, they built a loving family and were blessed with two daughters, Laura Leigh-Ann and Katlin Christine. The arrival of grandchildren brought immeasurable joy: Ruby White in 2011, Mollie Brown in 2016, Knox Henry in 2018, and Rosalee Joy in 2019. Cyndi cherished her role as "Mammy" and embraced every moment with her grandchildren.

Cyndi was born with a heart for service. She poured her time, energy, and talents into her community through countless acts of generosity. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and National Society Southern Dames of America (Ivy Green Dames), she dedicated herself to service projects, genealogical research, and supporting causes like eye research. Her volunteer work ranged from fund raising for local fire departments to cleaning headstones, preparing meals for the homeless, and assembling school supplies, clothing, and holiday gifts for students in need.

During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cyndi organized the purchase of pumpkins for kindergarteners who were unable to visit the pumpkin patch, ensuring they didn't miss a beloved tradition. She eagerly supported the New Market School food pantry each year and served on the Locust Grove Hostess Committee, celebrating new mothers and brides in her community.

In 2021, she joined the Mt. Pa ran Cemetery Preservation Project, one of her favorite endeavors. She helped restore the cemetery through grave marking and cleanup projects and coordinated a major 2021 event honoring three Revolutionary War veterans, ensuring every detail of the reception was memorable. She was instrumental in connecting her DAR chapter to cemetery preservation and the Buckhorn Cluster's Community Closet, identifying needs, coordinating donations, and mobilizing volunteers.

Cyndi's leadership extended into local schools as well. She served as a Trustee for Riverton Middle School and held various PTO board positions for many years. She also contributed to the Madison County Indian Education Committee and worked with the Community Closet for Buckhorn schools. Her organizational skills, "can-do" spirit, and unwavering dedication left a lasting legacy.

Professionally, Cyndi worked for Redstone Federal Credit Union for 34 years, retiring in July 2017. She was deeply involved in coordinating the Junior American Citizens fine arts competition, helping countless students achieve state, divisional, and national recognition. Her knack for hospitality shone each year as she organized the refreshments and logistics for the annual student awards ceremony, an event that brought together hundreds of families.

Beyond her service, Cyndi found joy in needlework, genealogy, good barbecue, and Alabama football. Her church community held a special place in her heart, and she remained an active and faithful member throughout her life. Cyndi's warmth, generosity, and tireless commitment to others have left an indelible mark on her family, friends, and community. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched, the traditions she nurtured, and the love she shared so freely.
