IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David Pierce
Merritt
April 2, 1986 – May 30, 2025
David Pierce Merritt, 39, passed away tragically on May 29, 2025, in Arab, Alabama, the victim of a senseless act of violence. Born April 2, 1986, in San Luis Obispo, California, David lived a life defined by creativity, compassion, and an enduring love for music, people, and his beloved dogs.
Known to many as "Dave," he lived with an open heart and an adventurous spirit. Though he called many places home, his truest sense of belonging was found in the music he created and the communities he built. Nowhere was this more evident than at music festivals—especially Bear Creek at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Florida—where David felt most himself: surrounded by friends, rhythm, and the magic of shared experience.
A graduate of Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, David earned a degree in audio engineering and turned his passion into a career. Music was more than a job—it was his sanctuary. Through it, he forged lifelong friendships, traveled widely, and left an unforgettable mark on everyone who heard his sound or shared his space.
David was a gifted storyteller, a seeker of beauty in the everyday, and someone with an extraordinary capacity for empathy. He had a way of making people feel truly seen and deeply understood. To know David was to experience his fierce loyalty, rare honesty, and the kind of friendship that stays with you for life.
David's collection of sweatshirts and concert mementos was legendary—a tangible reflection of his journey through sound, memory, and meaning. He held onto the things that mattered, just as fiercely as he held onto the people he loved.
Among the great loves of his life were his dogs, Koda and Sedona. They were not just pets—they were his heart. Companions on road trips, in quiet moments, and through life's storms, their bond was sacred. We take comfort in knowing that David is now resting with them—together again, whole and at peace.
He is survived by his sister, Nicole Merritt of Stevensville, Montana, and his niece, Evie, who shares his love for music and carries his spirit forward in every note and melody. To Nicole, David was more than a brother—he was a protector, a steady presence, and a place of unconditional acceptance. With him, she could be her truest self—seen, understood, and loved without question. Like many siblings, they had their disagreements, but beneath it all was deep respect and unwavering love. No matter the distance or time between them, they always found their way back to each other. Theirs was a bond that needed no explanation—only trust, loyalty, and the shared understanding that they were each other's home.
David is also survived by his closest friend and chosen family, Michael Weitzel of Orlando, Florida. Their friendship began when David was in middle school and grew into a lifelong brotherhood. From their earliest musical dreams to first jobs in the industry, from road trips to countless music festivals, Michael was by David's side through it all. He played a key role in many of David's most meaningful experiences—someone who not only witnessed his life, but helped shape it in quiet, often, behind-the-scenes ways. The connection they shared was deep and unwavering, built not on circumstance but on trust, laughter, shared passion, and years of quiet loyalty, presence, and unwavering support.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Florida, with details to be announced. All who knew David are invited to gather, share stories, and let the music carry his memory forward.
