Obituary

Douglas Wayne Sloan, Sr., 87, of Huntsville, AL passed away Feb.16, 2025 after a brief illness.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Martha Jones Sloan; his brothers Phillip, Cecil (Buddy), Eugene, Vernon; and sisters, Louise Embrey, Effie Schrimsher, and Patrica Stallings.

Doug is survived by his son, Doug, Jr. (Kim), his daughter, Dana Zimmerman (Scott), and grandsons, Morgan Sloan, Dylan Sloan, and Jared Zimmerman.

Doug grew up on Green Mountain, graduated from Butler High School, and was a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in Electrical Engineering.  Before his retirement, he worked for the Civil Service Radar Division at Redstone Arsenal.   Through his work he became a world traveler.

His father taught him to play the guitar, which led he and his friends to form a rock and roll band while in high school, playing gigs in and around the Huntsville area.  Later in life, he enjoyed playing on his 1956 Fender Stratocaster Guitar and jamming with his grandson, Morgan, while using his Taylor.

Doug never shied away from playing a leadership roll from the Scouts, to church, to briefing Generals in the Pentagon for his work.

Traveling was always something Doug loved, but seldom talked about any trip he took for more than a couple of days.  He had much rather talk about the next trip he was planning.  Of all the places he travelled from the varied colored sand beaches of the world to the Redwood Forest, he most enjoyed the beaches of the Gulf Coast while visiting relatives who lived there.

Doug was always ready to help anyone in need and always ready to go anywhere with friends and relatives.  Toby Keith must have had Doug Sloan in mind when he wrote the song, "Don't Let the Old Man In".
