Obituary

With peaceful assurance and a heart long anchored in faith, Ellene Causey Cleveland went to look face-to-face upon her Creator on December 5, 2025. Her earthly journey came to a close with the same grace, warmth, and quiet strength that defined every chapter of her extraordinary life.

Born August 7, 1927, in Gadsden, Alabama, Ellene Marie Causey entered the world as the beloved daughter of Ollie and Effie Causey. From an early age, her inquisitive spirit shone brightly—she asked questions, sought understanding, and developed a lifelong affection for books. Her mind was as expansive as her kindness, and she read voraciously until her later years, always eager to learn, wonder, and grow.

In 1949, Ellene's life took a divine and somewhat humorous turn when she was introduced—on a blind date—to the man destined to become her lifelong companion. The meeting almost didn't happen; she famously stood him up the first time. But when Ellene finally met Willis Caloway "Bill" Cleveland, she knew instantly, with the certainty of a heart guided by love, that this was the man she would marry. And she did—on August 6, 1949.

Together they built a life woven with devotion, laughter, steadfast partnership, and a faith that shaped every generation that followed. Their marriage of 62 years stands as a testament to enduring commitment and abiding love.

Ellene's greatest joy was her family, and her legacy flows richly through them. She is survived by her children: David Caloway Cleveland, Paul Alan Cleveland, and Carol Cleveland Barclay. She also treasured the warm and meaningful relationships she shared with her daughters-in-law, Lee Cleveland and Cathe Cleveland. Ellene embraced them not simply as extensions of her sons but as beloved daughters of her heart. Their mutual respect, affection, and shared faith brought Ellene deep joy, and their bond enriched the fabric of the Cleveland family in countless ways.

Throughout her life she prayed faithfully and fervently for her six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Her love was never passive; it encouraged, uplifted, and protected. Her unwavering support formed a foundation upon which her family stands even today. The generational blessings she cultivated—through prayer, compassion, and a heart turned toward God—will echo long into the future.

Ellene lived with a gentle but profound curiosity, always marveling at the mystery and beauty of God's creation. Though her family will feel the deep ache of her absence—her encouragement, her wisdom, her presence—they take comfort in imagining her radiant wonder now. Free from earthly limits, Ellene is joyfully exploring the vast mysteries of the universe, hand-in-hand with Jesus, her Savior in whom she placed all her trust.

Her story does not end here; it continues in the lives of all who loved her, in the generations shaped by her prayers, and in the eternal promise she now fully knows.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 20th, from 10:00-11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, with a funeral service immediately following. Burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery.
