After business school, she was hired by IBM-Federal Systems in Huntsville as a secretary in 1965. While working at IBM, she met a young engineer from NASA, Tom Mccurry, and, after a brief romance, they were married in Huntsville on March 1, 19?9· They began their married life working on the Saturn V project, and were in Huntsville when our spacecraft landed on the moon. Etta and Tom began a family in 1969, and their son Christopher Mark was born in Raleigh, NC in 1969. In April of 1971, a set of twin daughters was born in Raleigh, NC (Stephanie Nakata of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and Stacy Mccurry of Huntsville, AL).

Etta has one sister, Eileen Bobo Walls of Albertville, AL. The parents are deceased. Etta and Tom made many moves throughout the United States (Raleigh, NC, Columbia, SC, Chattanooga, TN, Irving, TX, Chicago, IL, and Los Angeles, CA). Etta and Tom lived in Los Angeles for 30 years, during which time they had the opportunity to assist with the planting of over 30 churches in the former Soviet Union. During this period, Etta and Tom had the opportunity to travel to/from Russia and Ukraine, and also to many other countries in England, Europe, Asia, Central America, Africa, and India. After this period, Etta had a 13-year career with Partners in Care Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving health care for senior citizens in Los Angeles County and the elevation of the importance of Social Workers in the United States. Etta was an important part in helping the medical profession to realize the impact of "social determinants of health", which are now recognized as essential components for Medicare Advantage plans in the United States. Etta retired from Partners in Care Foundation in late 2020, and she and Tom moved back to Huntsville, AL to be nearer their families. She was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in April of 2021, went through chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and was declared cancer-free in January of 2022. The cancer recurred and metastasized and, after valiant efforts to recover, she succumbed to the cancer on January 3, 2023.

During her life, Etta had a major impact on women in the many churches where she lived. She is sorely missed by her husband Tom, her children and extended family, and by her church family.
