Evelyn Hipps
Carter
July 12, 1928 – November 25, 2020
Mrs. Carter was born July 12, 1928 on Brindlee Mountain in Morgan County. As a teenager, she moved to Huntsville where she met her husband of 56 years, Jack, and raised 3 children. She had a long successful career as a graphic illustrator, first working for the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in the 1950's and transitioning to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in 1960 before retiring in 1981. She served as Chief Illustrator for Wernher von Braun and his team of rocket scientists and engineers working on the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs.
Evelyn had a quiet gentle spirit with a servant's heart. She loved gospel music and serving in her church communities. She learned at an early age to read music by shape notes. She sang in women's gospel groups in her youth and learned to play the piano. Later she served as choir director at Shiloh United Methodist Church and sang in the choir at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She also served on the First Cumberland Kitchen Committee and taught Sunday School.
Mrs. Carter is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Thomas Carter; grandsons, Brian Rhett Currah and William Grant Hicks Jr.; parents, David and Nettie Hipps; brothers, Buford, Carl, and James Hipps; and sister, Mildred Salter.
She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Hicks and husband Grant; son, Ricky Carter; daughter, Roxanne Melton and husband Walter; grandsons, Jason Carter and wife Coleena, and Logan Hicks; granddaughter-in-law, Nicole Moore Currah; and great-grandsons, Ashton, Asa, and Carson Carter.
