In Loving Memory of Joy McLean Hendrix

Joy McLean Hendrix, beloved mother, grandmother, teacher, genealogist, and faithful Christian, was born January 15, 1931, and passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026, at age 95.

Joy was nine years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked. During World War II, she and her dear aunt Lucinda supported the war effort by collecting scrap metal and rolling bandages for soldiers overseas, beginning a lifelong commitment to serving others.

A remarkable student, Joy graduated high school at 16 and married evangelist Robert Fulton Hendrix at 18. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. While raising their four children, Joy earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and teaching certification from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Joy devoted 25 years to teaching special education classes at Chapman Elementary School in Huntsville, AL. After retirement, she pursued her passion for genealogy, extensively researching the McLean family and preserving its Scottish and American heritage for future generations.

A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a faithful, lifelong member of the church of Christ. Joy lived her faith through service, devotion, and love for others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude Lee McLean and Lockie Belle McLean; her husband, Robert Fulton Hendrix; son, Robert Stephen Hendrix; granddaughter, Kristen Kuykendall Flatt; and her five siblings, Edmons “Eddie”, Belva, Tellis, Burtie, and Claude.

She is survived by her daughters Allison (Wayne) Kuykendall, Patsy Hendrix, and Judy Hendrix; grandchildren Emily (Jarod) Tanksley, Katie (Will) Harbin, Stevie Lynn Hendrix, Eric Hendrix, and Summer Stanton; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Joy will be remembered for her steadfast faith, devotion to family, love of teaching, dedication to preserving her family’s history, and willingness to serve others. Her life reflected faith, family, service, and love, leaving a lasting legacy in the many lives she touched and the generations who will carry her memory forward.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
