Freddie Wayne Kent born December 14, 1948 entered his eternal home on May 24, 2026. He heard his Master say, “Well done good and faithful servant“, your work is completed and enter in.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Carly Kent, stepmother Marjorie Kent, brother’s Keith Kent, Craig Kent, his son Heath Kent and his wife Sherry Kent.
He is survived by his children: Shawn (Lynda) Kent, Tracy (Jim) Quillin, Kasey (Donna) Kent, Brandy Kent, Cassandra (Crandon) Creel, and Boogie Jo (Michael) Barcus, Kim (Jimmy) Miller
Grandchildren: Kyle (Morgan) Kent, Shawnna Kent, Lindsey Quillin, Anna (Anthony) Reeb, Michael (Jordan) Cooper, Aaron Cooper, Garrett Kent, Hudson Kent, Jackson Kent, Tyler (Erin) Creel, Victoria (William) Perry, Emily Barcus, Erika Barcus, and Hannah (Tyler) Smith. Along with nine Great-Grandchildren
He was known as “Dad” to his six children and Paw Paw or Big Pop to his fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. They all are his pride and joy. He was the best dad around! He loved his family unconditionally. He worked hard all his life to provide for his family. He had a huge heart and would do anything for anyone.
His true passion was being a child of God and a Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. He gave his life to Christ in 1969. He was Ordained as a Baptist Preacher in August, 1977. He shared the Love of Christ and the Gospel every time he had an opportunity. He preached for almost fifty seven years and was a pastor for forty nine years. He even ministered to people from his hospital bed and never missed an opportunity to tell people about Jesus. One of his quotes was “You better hear me, Jesus Loves You and I do to”. He served the Lord, until God called him home.
He preached in many churches throughout multiple counties across North Alabama. He built a small country church New Fellowship Baptist Church in Elkmont, Alabama. God allowed him to Pastor there for twenty three years. He retired for a few years, then God called him back into a full time pastor position. His most recent church where he pastored was Home Mission Baptist Church. He loved his church families more than they know. He preached many sermons, but the main one is GOD LOVES YOU, John 3:16. Christ’s son Jesus died for each and every one of us. In order to spend eternity with him we all must
Admit: acknowledge to God that you are a sinner
Believe: that Jesus Christ is the son of God, He died on the cross for our sins and rose again.
Confess: your faith in Jesus publicly and ask him to be the Savior and Lord of your life.
His greatest accomplishment was being able to lead all of his children and some of his grandchildren to the Lord and being able to Baptize them. He performed numerous baptisms, baby dedications, funerals and marriage ceremonies over the years.
Wayne was a talented musician, he could play any instrument with strings and he could play the drums. He played and sang gospel music for many years. He loved to travel to pick and play music as a way to worship the Lord.
Wayne made a living as an over the road truck driver for many years. He drove for multiple companies before going to work for Wal-Mart. He hauled freight for Wal-Mart from 1981 to 1995, until he was disabled. He traveled over four million miles without any accidents. He is a man who has been almost everywhere. He saw over forty states through the windshield of a 18 wheeler. Over the road trucker’s called him “Shoestring” or “Preacher Man”. No matter where he went, he never met a stranger. He was a servant while traveling over the road and ministered to many people in their time of need. He has now traveled his last mile and he has reached his final destination, a place called Heaven. He is now discovering Heaven, the place he preached about for so many years.
Wayne has been a Mason for 36 years, he was a member of Gurley Masonic Lodge #521 and was currently their Chaplain. He was also a member of the Alabama York Rite. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers in the lodge and loved them greatly.
Wayne’s life was one of great strength, steadfast faith, and unwavering love for his Lord and his family. His legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. We will never forget his words of wisdom, “You better hear me, Jesus Loves You and I do to”.
