IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gary Warren
Gee, Sr.
October 13, 1940 – May 9, 2025
Gary W. Gee Sr. was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and spent most of his life in Huntsville, Alabama. He witnessed Huntsville's transformation from a small agricultural town into a thriving metropolitan city and was actively involved in its civic and community life. A founding member of the Huntsville Track Club, he played a key role in organizing the first Rocket City Marathon in 1977. He also engaged in community development and real estate initiatives throughout the years.
After graduating from Huntsville High School in 1958, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where his aptitude for languages earned him a year of study at Yale University. He became fluent in Mandarin Chinese and served as a USAF language interpreter.
Following his honorable discharge, he earned a degree in Political Science from the University of Alabama in 1967 and began a career as an intelligence officer at Redstone Arsenal, specializing in foreign ballistic missile analysis. In the 1980s, he worked in London with British Intelligence as part of an international exchange program, and later joined the Central Intelligence Agency in Virginia, retiring in 1993.
Gary then embarked on a second career in real estate and publishing, creating the Coast Digest, a newsletter covering real estate news and community events along the Alabama gulf coast. After returning to Huntsville, he briefly resumed intelligence work following the events of 9/11 before retiring fully to pursue writing. He authored both fiction and nonfiction inspired by his extensive intelligence experience.
Gary was predeceased by his parents Jack and Virginia (Fones), his stepfather Robert Flannagan, his wife Kathy (Henley) Gee, and his first wife Harriett (Forehand) Gee.
He is survived by his sons Gary Jr. (Lori) of Huntsville AL and Oliver (Wendy) of Tuscaloosa AL, his brother Jack (Phyllis) of Madison, AL, and his niece Sheila (Chip) and nephew Jack Warren Gee.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 15th, from 3:00-4:00 P.M., with a memorial service immediately following at Berryhill Funeral Home.
