July 11, 1936 – June 29, 2026
Gary P. Herring passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026. He lived a life defined by curiosity, service, innovation, the love of art, friendship, and love for his family.
Gary proudly served in the United States Army as a young man. During his military service, he formed lifelong friendships and enjoyed many memorable adventures.
Gary earned a degree in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Alabama. His passion for science and engineering led him to Huntsville, Alabama, where he worked with NASA as an Aerospace Engineer and Technologist during the exciting early years of the American space program.
In 1970, Gary moved with his family to Northern Virginia, where he worked with the United States Postal Service, eventually serving as Director of Research and Advanced Technology. His work transformed the nation's mail delivery system and laid the foundation for many of the automated systems still in use today.
Gary traveled extensively around the world for both business and pleasure. He enjoyed learning about different cultures, meeting new people.
In retirement, Gary became a familiar face at the Huntsville Aquatics Center, where he swam for two hours a day, five days a week. He treasured the friendships he made with fellow swimmers and the lifeguards.
Gary encouraged others, offered advice, and inspired those fortunate enough to know him. His kindness, generosity, intelligence, and sense of humor left a profound and lasting impact on countless friends, and family members. He helped shape many lives simply by being himself.
Gary's legacy lives on not only through his family and friends but also through the technological innovations that continue to serve millions of people every day. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
