Gilbert (Gil) Huhlein, 90, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026. Gil was born on June 10, 1935 in Louisville, KY along with fraternal twin Norbert Clarence. He was proceeded in death by his parents Arthur and Marcella Huhlein, fraternal twin Norbert Clarence who passed at the age of five years old, sister JeanMarie Schott, and his beloved wife of 54 years, Isabella (Izzy) Huhlein. A devoted father and grandfather, he is survived by his four sons, Gilbert Jr, Michael (Jackie), Douglas, and Bradley (Katie); grandchildren, Paige Woodard (Kyle), Brendan (Sarah), Holly, Cameron, and Ryan Huhlein; great grandchildren, Camille, Elise, and Audrey Woodard, and John Paul Huhlein; and sister Elinor Grant.
Gil graduated from Flaget High School in 1953, and attended the University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering where he lettered in track and cross country for three years. While attending college, Gil also began working at the Union Carbide Chemical Manufacturing Facility in the "Rubbertown" Industrial Complex of West Louisville. In May of 1957, Gil married the love of his life, Izzy, and was promptly drafted into military service. He was stationed at Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama from 1957 to 1959. At the end of his service, Gil and Izzy, along with their first child, returned to Louisville, Kentucky where Gil began his career with the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad. In 1969, Gil received a promotion that relocated him and his family to Nashville, Tennessee where he completed his career of 32 years, retiring as Division Engineer from L&N Railroad, now known as CSX.
As a faithful member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Gil served as Lay Minister, member of the Liturgy Committee, Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Instructor, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4972, in Donelson, TN. Gil was ordained in 1989 and served as Deacon at Holy Rosary for over 30 years.
A devoted father to his sons, he enjoyed many years of leadership and participation with them in the Boy Scouts of America, and the YMCA Indian Guides, and was always in the stands to cheer them on and support them in their sports teams endeavors.
After retirement from CSX, Gil became a certified H&R Block Tax preparer, and volunteered his services at the Donelson Senior Citizens Center, assisting seniors in the process of filling their tax returns. In September of 2023, he moved to Huntsville, AL to be closer to his family.
Visitation will be Monday March 16 from 9:00 am-10:00 am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church Huntsville, AL. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 am with Fr. Rick Chenault officiating. Graveside service will be Tuesday, March 17th at 2:30 pm at St Michael's Cemetery in Louisville, KY.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to " Room In The Inn, Nashville, TN " or " Pre Born! ".
