August 16, 1943 – October 24, 2022
James Phillip Certain, 79, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away peacefully on October 24, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Certain; his parents, Willie and Alvesta Certain; his son, Gary Certain; and his brother-in-law, Jack McLemore.
Mr. Certain is survived by his children, Jamey Certain and Daphne Certain Arriaga; his granddaughter, Brianna (Joshua) Arriaga-Lanier; his sister, Dorothy McLemore; his niece, Toy (Barry) Cline; and his nephew, Kem McLemore.
He is also survived by an uncountable number of happy memories. Among those memories, the family proudly provides the following few of their many here:
Mr. Certain is remembered as a stern but passionate baseball and softball coach to his son and granddaughter in their youth. His passion for the game stemmed from his own experience on various teams throughout his life. He was a competitive bowler, becoming a professional bowler in a local Huntsville Men's League by the age of 11. His uncanny abilities to compete were not limited to softball and bowling as he was playfully rumored to have been quite the pool and card shark.
He served in the Army National Guard as well as acting as a diligent draftsman whose work was utilized at Chrysler and on the first US Space Shuttle to go into space.
Mr. Certain had a profound ability to make those around him smile. He was always willing to offer a joke or song to encourage everyone around him to enjoy the day and life that they were living.
The most important thing that he is remembered for is being a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.
