Obituary

James Irvin Miles, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away on April 7, 2025, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family and friends. Born on July 29, 1932, in Dublin, Virginia, James lived a life rich in love, adventure, and cherished memories.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Betty Louise (Moran); their two beloved daughters, Beverly Bishop (Terry) and Susan Calhoun (ex. Marty); his treasured granddaughters, Jessica Depew, Jayme Stewart (Greg), Angela Harvey (Scott); his loving grandson, James McMillion (Kaby); his dear brothers, Jackie Miles (Barbara) and Jeff Miles (Hilda); and his dear sister, Shelia Miles. James was also the proud great-grandfather to 11 beautiful great-grandchildren, each of whom brought joy to his heart (Bella, Ella Grace, Tristan, Cole, Milo, Abigail, Olivia, Lotus, Isaiah, Solomon, Lily). He was predeceased by his loving parents, Irvin Miles and Ruby Duncan, and his cherished grandson, Jonathan Eldridge.

James was a faithful follower of Jehovah, a loving and supportive husband, and a devoted father and grandfather. His life was centered on love and kindness, always finding joy in the simplest moments. As a lifelong reader, he was always eager to know what those around him were reading, and his shelves were filled with books by authors like Richard Halliburton, Ken Follett, Pat Conroy, and John Grisham. He found joy not only in the written word but in learning about nature, different cultures, and the world around him. James' love for learning never ceased, and his curiosity was boundless. He was also proud of earning the rank of Tenderfoot in his youth as a Boy Scout.

James found immense joy in spending time with his family and friends, who affectionately called him "Dad." Whether cheering for Auburn football, watching tennis or racquetball, attending youth sports events, enjoying music concerts, or simply birdwatching, James embraced every moment of life with enthusiasm and gratitude. His wife, Betty, continues to care for their beloved birds, a reminder of the joy they shared together.

James' journey also took him to many parts of the world, thanks to his service in the United States Army. He and his family were blessed to live in incredible places like Istanbul, Turkey, Germany, Greece, England, Italy, France, Japan, and Korea. Through these experiences, he became a master of embracing different cultures and perspectives. James served in the Army for 14 years, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant, and continued his service to his country by working with the United States Postal Service until his retirement at age 72.

Our hearts are full of gratitude for the family, friends, and neighbors who supported us during James' battle with dementia. We will forever be thankful to Floyd "Tut" Fann Veterans Home, Hospice of North Alabama, and Dr. David McMillion for the compassionate care they provided him during his final years.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 11. We will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Southgate Clubhouse, 7020 Southgate Drive, Owens Cross Roads, Alabama. We invite friends and family to join us in honoring his memory and celebrating the beautiful life he lived.
