Obituary

In the early morning hours of January 16, James Barry Norris, age 80, went to be with the Lord. He was reunited with his parents, N. Alvin Norris and Edna Gurganus Norris; his brother, Gary Edward Norris; his grandparents; and all who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Caroline Anita Clower Norris; his brother, Ronald Alvin Norris; and his many descendants listed below.

Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 18 and proudly served for 20 years, with assignments in Columbus, Mississippi; Minot, North Dakota; Fairbanks, Alaska; Yuba County, California; and Blytheville, Arkansas. While stationed in Columbus, MS, he met the love of his life, Glenda Price Norris, to whom he was married for 59 years. Together they raised two children: Stacie Norris Yarbrough and James Barry Norris, Jr. (Cynthia Medley Norris).

Jim was a devoted grandfather to seven grandchildren: Michelle Yarbrough; Blake Yarbrough (Kacey Coulter Yarbrough); Alec Yarbrough; Darby Yarbrough Cleveland (Jonah Cleveland); Daniel Yarbrough (Connor Drappier Yarbrough); Megan Norris Fleischmann (Jason Fleischmann); and Zachary Norris (Mehak Nadeem Norris). He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren.

Following his military retirement, Jim worked briefly at the Huntsville Jetplex before beginning a career with the United States Postal Service. During his time there, he befriended several Deaf coworkers and took it upon himself to learn sign language so he could communicate with them. He was deeply proud of this accomplishment and treasured the friendships he built.

Jim was perhaps best known everywhere he went as "The Dollar Man." Through his love of "Dollargami," he delighted countless people by folding dollar bills into creative shapes and leaving them as tips or gifts. Many servers still cherish these keepsakes today; one Huntsville restaurant even displayed them behind glass. He folded diaper shapes to celebrate new babies and made special efforts to expand the collections of servers he especially liked. His unique kindness caught the attention of The Huntsville Times, which featured him in an article. Above all, Jim loved the smiles his folded dollars brought to others.

In addition to his Dollargami, Jim enjoyed volunteering with the Hartselle Senior Center's Meal Delivery Program and participating in various service opportunities, including a community garden with Decatur Church of Christ, where he was a faithful member.

Jim was a longtime resident of Huntsville and later Hartselle, Alabama. He spent a brief period living in Florida during his retirement years before returning to the place he loved most—North Alabama.
