James (Jim) Edward Sanford, age 93, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025. Born in Jasper, Alabama, on September 25, 1932, James was the son of the late James Paul and Amma Barrentine Sanford.
James proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge. Following his service, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard College in Birmingham on August 9, 1957.
He began his professional life as a mathematics teacher and later became principal at Dora High School in Dora, Alabama. His lifelong passion for math and education shaped the lives of many students and teachers. In 1960, James began a long and distinguished career as a Budget Analyst with the NASA Space Program and the U.S. Army in Huntsville, Alabama, where he worked until his retirement in 1998.
James was a devoted husband to Lorene Middleton Sanford, his beloved wife of 31 years, until her passing in 1983. Together they built a loving family grounded in faith and kindness.
James is survived by his daughters, Donna Jean Rigsby of Hazel Green, Alabama, and Patricia Joyce Perry (Kenny) of Gurley, Alabama; his grandson, Joshua Paul Perry (Woodstock, Georgia); and two great-granddaughters, Avery and Riley Perry. He is also remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews, as well as special friends Cashonna and Eugene Copeland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorene; his brother, Gene Sanford; his sister, Betty Sanford Broadhead; and his son-in-law, Robert Rigsby.
James lived independently throughout his 93 years, a testament to his strength and determination. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, gentle humor, and lifelong devotion to his family, friends, and faith.
At his request, no funeral service is planned. A brief graveside service will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville on Friday, November 7 th at 12:00 Noon. His family is grateful for the many prayers, love, and support shared during this time.
