Jean Black Brockwell, 83, of Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, and formerly of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on September 25, 2026.

Jean was born and raised in Petersburg, Virginia. She was the eldest of two children, born to James Hezza Black, Sr. and Bertha Gertrude Black. After graduating from Petersburg High School, she worked in a local bank and later as a receptionist for ABB. Jean married John Rufus Brockwell in 1962, and they were blessed with two children, born in 1966 and 1977.

Jean’s life was devoted to God and her family. Her selfless love was extended to her husband of 62 years, as well as her daughters and grandchildren. Jean was active in church, serving in the children’s department and music ministry for many years. Jean enjoyed spending quality time with her family. She loved music, collecting antiques, and hosting family and friends in their home.

Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Brockwell; her parents, James and Bertha Black; and her brother, James Black, Jr. She is survived by her children: Amy Brockwell King of Greenville, SC, and Jennifer Brockwell Bonner (Preston) of Owens Cross Roads, AL. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Victoria Lane King of Charlotte, NC, Matthew Reamy King (McKenzie) of Nashville, TN, and Logan Allen Bonner of Owens Cross Roads, AL.

Jean’s family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of South Hampton Nursing Center in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, for their caregiving over the past four years.
