IN LOVING MEMORY OF
"Jim" James
Morrow Ivy, V
November 10, 1955 – July 11, 2025
James Morrow Ivy, the 5th (Jim) passed away on July 11th, at home with his wife Sharon Humphrey Ivy, and his stepdaughter (Shannon Janette Hochman).
Jim was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, as the oldest child of then Captain James Morrow Ivy, the 4th and wife Betty Lou Ivy. Jim has two siblings: sister Cynthia Wilson Scott and brother John Alfred Ivy who between them, provided Jim with three nieces. His sister has two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Wilson (married to Melissa Acevedo), and Christina Wilson Yates, married to Adam Michael Yates. Christina's sons are Wyatt Michael Yates and Emmett Arthur Yates. His brother John has one daughter, Shannon Nicole Ivy.
The Ivy's were a military family and moved many times: including places like Fort Lewis, WA; Aberdeen, MD; France; White Sands, NM; Picatinny Arsenal, NJ and three times at Redstone Arsenal, AL, where the family finally settled.
Jim was a complex man. He was athletic, tall (6'4" and lean) but wasn't allowed to play sports in high school yet was able to walk onto Bear Bryant's Alabama University's football team as a freshman. His mother was a talented golfer, and Jim followed in her footsteps also becoming an excellent golfer. After his first year at Alabama, he joined the US Army as a signal analyst. Then he moved back to Huntsville and started building houses under his future father-in-law. A classic story, Jim married the boss's daughter and had a son, James Morrow Ivy, the 6th, followed by an ugly divorce which created a distance between father and son which was never restored.
After the divorce, he moved to Virginia and worked building custom homes in a booming real estate market. He met his wife Sharon in Virginia, they married in 2002 and moved back to Huntsville in 2004 to be near Jim's family and to the life he loved outdoors, on the water fishing and hunting geese, turkeys, dove and other fowl. He loved to plan hunting trips to Arkansas, joining much loved friends for fun, companionship and food. He loved to cook and to fish.He built his final home with plans to retire there and so he and Sharon did just that.
Jim was a kind man, was easy to talk to and enjoyed teaching other. He could seem harsh to some, but in his heart, he grieved deeply when friends passed on. Just as his wife is doing now. God bless you Jim for sharing your life with me and guiding my daughter into hers.
Receiving friends will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Berryhill Funeral Home from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, with the service immediately following at 4:00 in the chapel.
