Joan Crowder Stegall, 83, of Huntsville passed away on June 15, 2023.

Joan, known as Nana by her grandchildren and as Joni by her friends, was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. At the time of her birth on February 28, 1940, Joan was the earliest-born surviving premature baby in the state of Tennessee.

Joan was a long-time member of Mayfair Church of Christ and involved in many volunteer efforts, including letter-writing to U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq. She cherished the letters they wrote back and was honored when she received an American flag that had flown over one of the military bases.

Joan loved serving others by writing cards to those in need of encouragement and sympathy as well as celebration. Legally deaf from birth yet an expert lip-reader, Joan never let her lack of hearing slow her down and would talk to anyone at any time, always leaving them smiling.

Joan is survived by her husband of 56 years, Woody Joe Stegall; her son Greg Stegall (Kristen); her daughter Emily Little (Matt); her brother, John Crowder; her four grandchildren, Logan Stegall, Ethan Stegall, Katelyn Stegall, and Sophie Little; the many dogs she loved, her own (Amber) and her three granddogs, Radnor, Tucker, and Aspen. Preceded in death by her parents, Grady Paul and Mary Brown Crowder.

A celebration of life will be held at Mayfair Church of Christ on July 9th at 3 PM with visitation starting at 2 PM.
