IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joe Wheeler
Patterson
April 17, 1929 – May 20, 2025
Joe Wheeler Patterson, 96, proud U.S. veteran, devoted public servant, and beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. His life was defined by faith, honor, service, and love.
Born on April 17, 1929, Joe served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. A patriot in every sense, he proudly wore the uniform and served his country with distinction.
After receiving an honorable discharge, Joe embarked on an impressive 36-year career in law enforcement. He dedicated 20 years to the Huntsville Police Department, where he held positions as a patrol officer, detective, and administrative assistant to the Mayor's Office. In 1978, he was elected Sheriff of Madison County, serving four consecutive terms over 16 years, characterized by steadfast leadership and a commitment to service. A graduate of the 77th session of the FBI National Academy, he was inducted into the Alabama Police Officers Hall of Fame in 1995, both honors reflecting his unwavering dedication to professionalism, leadership, and excellence in law enforcement.
Joe often offered this advice to young officers entering the field of law enforcement: "Treat everyone you encounter with respect and dignity, regardless of what they have done. While you will encounter individuals at the worst times of their lives, treat them like they are your own family." These weren't just words; they were how he led, lived, and loved.
Joe believed deeply that it was more blessed to give than to receive. His generosity knew no bounds. Whether through a helping hand, a quiet act of service, or heartfelt encouragement, Joe was always ready to give of himself for the good of others.
At the center of Joe's world was his family. His love for his wife of 57 years, Jane McKee Patterson, was steadfast and inspiring. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared purpose. He is survived by Jane; his sons, Wheeler Brent Patterson (Donna) and Jason Scott Patterson (Ginger); and his beloved granddaughters, Cora Patterson Perry (Bryce), Chandler Noel Patterson (Tanner), Carlee Jo Patterson, and Kenzie Leigh Honaker.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Washington Patterson, his mother, Effie Owen Patterson and a host of siblings.
Outside of work and service, Joe found joy in life's simplest pleasures. He had a passion for landscaping and took pride in maintaining his yard with care and precision. Weekends spent on his John Deere mower, followed by family dinners around the barbecue grill, were among his happiest moments.
