Obituary

John William Fleming, age 58, of Huntsville, Ala., entered into eternal bliss on July 9, 2026. 

John was preceded in death by his triplet unborn children whom he now holds in his arms in Heaven, his parents, Dr.John Lee Fleming and June Rudder Fleming, grandparents, Dr. John Edwin “Sandy” Fleming and Ellie B. Fleming; Dr. William H. Rudder and Carolyn Slay Rudder, and cousin, John Robert “Robbie” Pritchard.

 He leaves behind his wife Dava Fleming; children Joshua, Kaitlyn, Alexis and Isaac Fleming of Huntsville, Ala. and Michael Hammonds (Kayla) of Gadsden, Ala. sister; Dr. Jennifer Whitcomb (Scott) of Meridian, Miss.; father-in-law, David Cole of Gadsden, Ala., sister-in-law, Crystal Precise of Huntsville, Ala.; brothers-in-law, Brian Cole (Shanna) of Athens, Ala. and Matthew Cole of Gadsden, Ala.; grandchildren, Bailee, Kynnedi, Myka and Kade Hammonds of Gadsden, Ala., Isaiah, Baylor and Riley Johnson of Decatur, Ala.; nephews; Baker Whitcomb of Starkville, Miss., Jackson Whitcomb of Meridian, Miss., Colin Cheatwood of Huntsville, Ala., Jake Warden of Athens, Ala., niece; Cailee Yancey of Huntsville, Ala. and great-niece, Willow Warden. Bonus children and grandchild: Luke, Katie and Maverick Mackey.

 John was a compassionate, kind, dedicated, loyal, faithful and steadfast husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had many names through the years. Besides being “J” and John-Boy to his wife, he was Daddy to his children, Bubby to his sister, Deet to his family and friends, Big Grumpy to his co-workers,Uncle Don to his niece, Papa to his grandchildren, Kermie and Precious to his father-in-law. His radiant smile, quick wit, and infectious laughter were his trademarks. He had a remarkable gift for making everyone he met feel valued, simply by sharing his joyful, magnetic spirit. Wherever he went, his light shone brightly and warmed the hearts of those around him. 

John was born on March 10, 1968 in Warner Robins, Ga.and spent his childhood and adolescence in Jackson, Alabama. John attended private school at Jackson Academy from first through twelfth grade and excelled as a student while there. He developed a love for sports and participated in both baseball and basketball at the school starting in junior high and also played baseball in the city Minor League, Little League, and Dixie Youth organizations between the ages of 6 and 14. Over the course of his Little League and Dixie Youth career, he was thrice selected to the All-Star team for outstanding playas both a pitcher and first baseman. As a forward on the high school basketball team, he was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player following his junior and senior seasons and was also honored as an All-State selection that final year. In 1986 he graduated with honors and was named Salutatorian of his class and voted “Most Likely to Succeed” and “Most Intellectual” by his classmates in the senior class Who’s Who. 

He attended the University of Alabama immediately after graduation and graduated cum laude in 1990 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science Engineering. In May of 1992 he graduated magna cum laude with a Master’s Degree in Computer Science. Following graduation, John relocated to Huntsville, Ala. and began his career as a Software Engineer working at Teledyne Brown. In 1993, John was hired at Coleman Research and remained there until 1996, when he began working at Dynetics in the role of SETA Support for the THAAD Launcher Software and Requirements. In August of 2000, John began employment at Lockheed Martin. His latest role was Systems Engineer as a Software Architect for THAAD. He remained at Lockheed Martin until the time of his passing.

 He married, Dava Cole Fleming, on December 29, 2006. He was a licensed Madison County Foster and Adoptive parent. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church from 2004 until 2008. He was a member of Calvary Assembly of God from 2008 until 2015 and was baptized there with his wife and two eldest sons on March 31 st , 2013. He was an active member of Church of the Highlands since 2015 and attended the Huntsville Campus where he served on the greeter team. In 2026, with the expectation of retirement in 2027 and having more free time, he began serving on the Inspiration and Preserve on Green Mountain Homeowner’s Association Board where he was a beloved member of the community. He was a lifelong and devoted Alabama fan, a member of Tide Pride, and a season ticket holder for football. He began attending Alabama games when he was only four years old and it was his one and only recreational pastime besides spending time and making precious memories with his family. The family would like to thank the medical staff at Universal Studios ,the Orlando Fire Department and Doctor P. Phillips Hospital. 

His Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 17th, at Church of the Highlands – Huntsville Campus with Pastor Allen Pedram officiating and Berryhill Funeral Home & Crematory directing. Visitation with the family will be held at 1 p.m. No interment to follow. Pallbearers will be Nick Brown, Tony Brunson, Ladd Lewis, Stacy McCants, David McKee, and Dan Strickland. Honorary Pallbearers are Chris Cheatwood and Rodney Precise. Memoriams may be made to Church of the Highlands, Alabama Foster Care Association or the American Heart Association.
