John Anthony Schoen, 86, passed away peacefully on August 17th , 2026.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, John grew up with a strong sense of adventure and service. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that took him overseas and allowed him to experience different places, cultures, and eventually the love of his life. After his time in the Air Force, he continued his career in the aerospace industry, eventually making his way to NASA and the Space Shuttle program. He was proud of his work and the role he played in something so extraordinary.

Outside of work, John was a devoted Cleveland Guardians fan and faithfully followed his team each season. He also loved the outdoors—camping, fishing, and spending countless hours tending to his yard with his dog, Bacchus, as his constant shadow. John could always find something to do outside, and he took great pride in creating a home where family could gather and make lasting memories.

After he retired, he and his wife, Sue, loved traveling the country together, exploring new places, visiting family and friends, and sharing their adventures along the way. But, above all John loved his family. Time spent with his kids, grandkids, and loved ones was what mattered to him most.

John is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sue Schoen; daughter, Dee-Anne Schoen; daughter-in-law, Eva Schoen; grandchildren, Danielle (Blake) Alexander, Tyler and Chloe Schoen; great-grandchildren, Aurora and Liam Alexander; his sister, Bonnie Sulda; and his brothers-in-law Dhani and Austin Bisgood.

It is with unimaginable sadness and a sense of peace that we say goodbye to John. One day after his passing, his beloved son, Mark, passed away as well. Amid our grief, we imagine them, father and son, together forever (watching baseball), towards heaven they are with us, knowing just how deeply they are loved and missed.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
