Joseph Max
Campbell, Sr.
December 24, 1939 – December 18, 2025
Joseph Max Campbell, Sr., known as "Max", passed away peacefully with family by his side, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judith Bynum Campbell; sons, Joseph Max Campbell, Jr. (Betsy) and Dr. Daniel Campbell; grandsons: Zachary McCrary (Sara Parker), Mason McCrary, Joseph Max "Buddy" Campbell III, Charlie Campbell and John Campbell; sister, Judy Pitts; sisters-in-law, Gloria Campbell and Jenny Bynum (Thane Bryant); brother-in-law, Jerry Bynum (Cheryl); and several nieces and nephews. Max is also survived by his best friend of the past twelve years, his beloved terrier Archie.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela Campbell McCrary; parents, Max and Josephine Campbell; brothers, Gregory Campbell and Rev. Jack Campbell.
Max was born and raised in Gadsden, AL. He was a proud graduate of Auburn University, achieving B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering. He later taught engineering at Auburn and the University of Alabama. He served his country in the US Army, stationed in Verdun, France during the Cold War Berlin Crisis in 1961. In 1967, Max moved to Huntsville to work for Sperry Rand Corp., where he met his wife Judy. He spent most of his professional life working for Boeing, helping to develop the earliest generations of aerospace guidance systems.
Max was an active and devoted member of University Church of the Nazarene and previously a long-time member of First Alliance Church. Max served as a member of Gideons International, providing free Bibles around the community and the world. He generously and quietly supported numerous faith-based and community charities. He was a man of strong faith, who lived a life of service to family, church and community.
Max loved to travel and explore with his family, embarking on numerous lengthy road trips around the US with his children and grandchildren. He loved gardening his whole life and served as a volunteer and instructor for the Master Gardeners of North Alabama and Huntsville Botanical Gardens. He was awarded Master Gardener of the Year in 2004. Max was an avid and competitive golfer. He supported Auburn sports enthusiastically for nearly 70 years. He was a curious and voracious reader and amassed an enormous library.
Max will be remembered for his faith, intellect dedication to his family and quiet but extensive service and generosity to church and community.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 3, 2026 from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at Berryhill Funeral Home, followed by service at 11:00. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
