Joseph Lewis
Shady, Jr.
December 20, 1935 – May 26, 2026
Joseph Lewis Shady Jr., 90, of Huntsville, AL passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
Mr. Shady is survived by his two sons (Joel and Daniel), daughter (Christine Hayes), several grandchildren (Jeffrey, Stephen, Katheryn, Conner, Lillian, Matthew, Logan), and great-grandchildren (Aurora, Atlas).
Joseph is preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Marie (Woronko) Shady, parents Joseph L. Shady Sr. and Gertrude (Tamblyn) Shady, and step-brother Harry Smith.
Joseph was born in Wyoming, PA and grew up enjoying the outdoors next to the Susquehanna River. His father was chief of police in Wyoming, PA and his mother worked at the MK garment factory to raise their children. His love of sports-- especially track and field and football-- started at an early age playing with the neighborhood children in Luzerne county. Joseph graduated from Penn State in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He married the love of his life, Geraldine Woronko, on June 27, 1964. They raised three loving children- Joel, Christine, and Daniel; all of which graduated with college degrees. During the 1960s, Joseph’s family traveled the United States working advanced technology programs for the United States military and NASA. In the early 1970s, the family settled down in Huntsville where Joseph and Geri remained for the rest of their lives. In between working on several major technology programs, Joseph enjoyed his hunting and fishing hobbies locally and in Colorado. A particular joy in his life was vegetable gardening where he tended several fields and shared the produce with the neighbors and church members. Joseph cared for his wife during her battle against dementia. His final years were limited due to mobility issues while he waited to join Geri in heaven with God.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 3rd from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM followed by a graveside service at 11:30 AM at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in memory of Joseph Lewis Shady Jr.
