Joyce Maddox Sumner, born on June 2, 2006, in Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026. Her life was marked by dedication to family, career, and cherished interests, leaving behind a legacy of love and hard work.
A proud graduate of Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia, Joyce pursued her education with enthusiasm and determination. After completing her studies, she moved to Atlanta, where she contributed her talents to Life of Georgia Insurance Company. Her career path reflected her commitment to service and professionalism.
In 1975, Joyce embarked on a significant chapter of her life alongside her husband, Theron Ross Sumner, owning and operating Echono Battery until 1999. This partnership was a testament to her business acumen and teamwork, qualities that defined much of her adult life.
Joyce enjoyed a rich personal life filled with hobbies that brought her joy and relaxation. She was passionate about bowling and quilting, activities through which she found community and creative fulfillment.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Donna Peck (Dennis), Cathy Sumner Watkins, and Kim Best (Jonathan). Her family extended through her grandchildren Roslyn Neely, Kristin Grider, Jessica Robinson, Amy Harris, Shelby Fannin, Abigail Best, and Jackson Best, who, along with 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, carry forward her memory and spirit.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Theron Ross Sumner; her parents, JT and Chatherine Maddox; as well as one sister and four brothers. Their memories remain a cherished part of her story.
Family, friends, and all who knew Joyce are invited to honor her life at a visitation held on April 3, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Berryhill Funeral Home & Crematory, located at 2305 Memorial Parkway NW, Huntsville, AL 35810. A graveside service will take place the following day, April 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Bankhead Cemetery, 2201 Co Road 642, Mentone, AL 35984.
Joyce Maddox Sumner's life was a testament to resilience, family devotion, and community engagement. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know her.
