Kathleen married the love of her life, Frank, on December 26, 1955. The short time they lived in Chicago Kat worked for Time magazine.
Frank and Kat moved to Alabama where they had and raised their family. Kathleen loved her family fiercely. While Frank served in the US Army, Kathleen took care of their home and children. She made many sacrifices over the years for her children. To make extra money, Kat babysat many children over the years. Some calling her Mama Vaughn. Several she kept stayed in touch with her and had Kat keep their own children.
Kat was known for her kind heart and her generosity. Over the years, Kat had crocheted hundreds of toboggans, for which she gave to the homeless. Also, she crocheted many black toboggans for the Huntsville Police Officers and pink ones for Liz Hurley's Annual Breast Cancer Run. During football season, she crocheted SEC team toboggans and put them in her "Lil library". She loved her Lil library that was built by her son, David, for her 84th birthday, in honor of his baby sister, Tracy.
Kathleen also made hundreds of homemade quilts and baby blankets. She was very crafty. Cross stitch, plastic, canvas, and homemade jellies all won her numerous blue ribbons at the county fair. She was so talented. Kat loved puzzle books and reading the Old Huntsville Magazine, in which she wrote many articles.
Kat's most treasured times were keeping her grands: Ethan, Colton and Maizie. She loved her great-granddaughter, Everly.
Kathleen was the widow of Retired Sergeant Major Franklin D. Vaughn, whom she loved and missed dearly. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Myrtle Smith; brother Arthur, of Athens, TN; her husband of 50 years, Franklin Vaughn; eldest daughter, Brenda Lowe and youngest daughter, Tracy Dyess.
