Obituary

Katie Mae Jones Goodwin Crawford, age 97, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026.

Katie was born on December 20, 1928, in Decatur, Alabama, to Atha Lee Jones and Annie Lee Williams Jones. As a young child, her family moved to Tony, Alabama, settling on a farm beside her mother’s parents. Her father left his work with the railroad to become a farmer, butcher, and master of many trades. Katie grew up as the seventh of eleven children in a large, hardworking, and deeply loving family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both of her husbands, and all but one of her siblings: Mary Jones Broadway, Bruce Jones, Woodrow Jones, Elsie Jones, Betty Jones Lee, Dorothy Jones Smith, Odell Jones Wilbanks, Marjorie Jones Adcock, and Marvin Jones. She is survived by her beloved brother, Elmer Jones, and his wife, Jane.

Katie married Melvin Goodwin, sharing 47 devoted years until his passing. She later married Eugene Crawford, with whom she spent seven loving years.

Katie worked briefly as a telephone switchboard operator before choosing to stay home with her baby daughter. She later became the driving force behind a successful rental property business, which she operated for more than 60 years. She also cared for six‑week‑old Rip Patton for six precious years, forming a lifelong bond she cherished deeply.

A gifted seamstress, Katie designed clothing, made outfits for her daughters before sunrise, and became the neighborhood’s trusted alteration lady. She was known for her warm smile, quick humor, and generous spirit.

Katie was a devoted Bible scholar who memorized Scripture and prayed faithfully for others. She taught Sunday School for many years, especially cherishing the elderly members of her church. In her later years, she hosted Bible studies in her home and began a book and card ministry, sharing encouragement wherever she went.

Her favorite poet was Helen Steiner Rice, and Katie often recited “On the Wings of Prayer.” She touched the hearts of many healthcare workers with her prayers, poems, and kindness.

Katie leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and service. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna Goodwin Tucker and Della Goodwin Bodine; son‑in‑law, Perry Bodine; grandchildren: Robbie Tucker (Sarah), Jeff Love (Silver), Tyler Bodine (Laurel), Lindsey Bodine Lomax (Hamilton); great‑grandchildren: Luke, Lilly, Melanie, Dusting, Dakota, Daylin, Atha Lee, Inez, and Vivian; and great‑great‑grandchildren: Dawson, Naveah, Ryan, and Kaylen.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 18, 2026, 12:00 - 1:00 PM at Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama. Chapel Service will follow at 1:00 PM. Burial will be at Shady Grove Cemetery at 11044 Wall Triana Hwy, Toney, Alabama 35773.
