Larry Shipman of Huntsville, AL, passed away on March 11, 2026.
He was born on November 9, 1942, in Geneva, NY. Growing up in Penn Yan, NY, Larry graduated from Penn Yan Academy, Class of 1960. He continued his education at Oswego State University, where he studied Industrial Arts. After completing a Master's degree in Science Education, he taught high school science in Hannibal and Cato, NY
.Larry left teaching and made his home in Hollis, NH, in 1972. He worked for Fimbel Door in Nashua, NH, for approximately 15 years, and then Conant Ball Furniture in Gardner, MA, before starting his own building company, Wood Awls. Later, he relocated to Huntsville, AL, where he worked in construction for Lee Builders until his retirement in 2012. An Eagle Scout in his youth, Larry carried a lifelong love of the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and exploring America's National Parks.
He was also a devoted motorsports and NASCAR enthusiast, frequently attending races at Watkins Glen International during his college years. While living in New Hampshire, Larry restored a 1953 MG TD and became an active member of the local M.G. T-Party, participating enthusiastically in rallies and club events. He also had a love for dancing and regularly attended square dances in the Guntersville, AL area in the 1990s.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Regina Johnson Shipman; parents, Charles Henry Shipman and Illa Louise (Cowell) Shipman; and sister, Norma Jean Shipman.
He is survived by his daughters, Heather Lynn Shipman, Holly Lee Smith, and Darcie Ann Shipman; stepson, Neal Brian Ledbetter; his former spouse, Deborah Knight Shipman; grandson, Declan Chandler Reed; and granddaughters: Kallan Illa Charest, Olivia Elinor Smith, Addie Wynn Ledbetter and Eleanor Ledbetter.
A memorial service is being held August 1, 2026 at 4:00 in Huntsville, AL, at Berryhill Funeral Home. Family graveside service to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.
