IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lewis Scott
Fichter
December 31, 1939 – May 10, 2025
Dr. Lewis Scott Fichter was born on December 31, 1939, in Dover, New Jersey. He passed away peacefully at his home in Lacey's Spring, Alabama on May 10, 2025. He was 85 years old.
Lewis lived a life marked by intelligence, faith, service, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. A standout student and athlete, he attended Morris County High School in New Jersey, where he quickly rose to prominence as a gifted baseball player. As a catcher, he earned a spot on the State All-Star team and was invited to try out for the New York Yankees, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies—several of whom encouraged him to return after college.
Lewis chose the path of education and intellectual pursuit, earning a B.S. in Secondary Education (Mathematics) from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. He went on to complete a Master's Degree in Mathematics at Rutgers University, a Master's Degree in Business at the University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in Statistics at the University of Alabama.
Throughout his professional life, Lewis was deeply respected for his analytical brilliance and leadership. He was a frequent speaker and esteemed member of the Society of Cost Estimating and Analysis. He served as Chief Cost Analyst at Redstone Arsenal before working for over two decades at Tecolote Research in Huntsville, Alabama, where he became Office Manager and a trusted mentor to many.
At the center of Lewis's life was his family. He was a faithful and doting husband to his college sweetheart, Dianna Jean, and a loyal and loving father to their three children. His dedication extended to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom he was a wise and joyful patriarch. His life was a daily example of selflessness, hard work, and godly character. Whether tending his vegetable garden, repairing a car, working in the yard, preparing food, or simply sharing laughter around the table, Lewis brought diligence to every task.
He was a man of many talents—an exceptional carpenter, mechanic, painter, gardener, writer, mathematician, piano player, statistician, and cook. But perhaps most remarkable was his generosity of time and money, his sense of humor, his loyalty, his even temperedness, and the quiet strength with which he led his family and lived his Christian faith.
Lewis Scott Fichter's legacy is one of faith, wisdom, humility, selflessness, and steadfast love. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who had the honor of knowing and loving him.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, George and Hazel Fichter of Dover, New Jersey; his brother, George Fichter of Silver Springs, Maryland; and his beloved son, Scott Vincent Fichter of Huntsville, Alabama.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dianna Jean Fichter; his son, Lewis L. Fichter (Cynthia) of Lacey's Spring, AL; his daughter, Gina M. Moreno (Alex) of Greer, SC; his grandchildren: Philip Fichter, Andrew Fichter (Brittany), and Daniel Fichter of Lacey's Spring, AL; Alexander Moreno (Olivia), Timothy Moreno, Taylor Moreno, and Audrey Moreno of Greer, SC; and his great- grandchildren: Preslee, Paislee, Madelynn, and Elias Fichter of Lacey's Spring. He is also survived by his sister, Sarah Davis of Dover, NJ; his sister, Hazel Upton of Wilmington, NC; and his twin brother, Lance Fichter of North Muskegon, MI.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18th, from 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. at Berryhill Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 P.M. with Alex Moreno officiating. Burial will take place at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
