Obituary

On Sunday, April 10, 2022, Louis "Mac" Ray McMurtrie passed away unexpectedly at his home
in Harvest, Alabama at the age of 73.

Louis was born on October 13, 1948 in Huntsville, AL to Hubert and Josephine McMurtrie. The
family lived in Madison County, where Louis lived the rest of his life. No stranger to hard work,
Louis spent his life in several different roles. While he was in school he helped out the local
carpenter, a night manager at a local gas station and a bartender at Plantation Dinner Theatre
before he joined the U.S. ARMY. He was most proud of his time spent serving his country in
the U.S. ARMY, during the Vietnam War era where he received numerous awards and medals. After
leaving the Army, he found himself continuing to give back as he joined the police force with the
Huntsville Police Department. After a short stem of giving back to his community, he became
an employee at the Marshall Space Flight Center where he worked in logistics until he retired in
2017. Upon retirement, Louis went home to be the primary caregiver to his wife, Becky, who
was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Louis loved to hunt, fish, coach Matthew and Ashley
in sports and his animals. If you knew anything about Louis, he was always watching the
weather. Louis's final days were spent with his childhood best friend, Kenneth Hilliard, out on
the river fishing, picking out plants for their gardens watching the weather or just helping each
other out with whatever they needed.

Louis lived for his 5 grand babies. He spent many years helping Ashley raise Adalyn, Graeson
and Lockridge before they moved away. He was nothing short of their fatherly role and the
greatest Paw Paw. He lived for spring breaks, holidays and summers when the grandkids came
to spend the entire summer and break. He would tell tall tales just to extend the "bad weather
forecast" just so the grandkids wouldn't have to go back home. At the time of Louis's
unexpected passing, he was days shy of heading to Hot Springs, AR to see his now 5 grand
babies.

Louis is preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Lewis McMurtrie and Josephine Harper
McMurtrie; two sisters, Patricia Ann Smith and Norma Hobbs.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Ann Kell McMurtrie of Harvest, Alabama; his children,
Matthew McMurtrie of Harvest, Alabama and Ashley McMurtrie Long and Justin Long of Hot
Springs, Arkansas; his 5 grand babies that were the light of his entire world, Adalyn Ridgeway,
Graeson McMurtrie, Lockridge McMurtrie, Paislie Long and Behr Long; two sisters, Faye Tillery
and Bobbie Little; and one brother, Tommy McMurtrie; as well as several nieces, nephews,
great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Louis's Name to Tunnels to Towers Organization or
