IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Luke A
Schutzenhofer
February 14, 1939 – February 6, 2026
Dr. Luke A. Schutzenhofer peacefully passed from this life on February 6, 2026, maintaining his gentle spirit and smile to the very end. Personally, he was a father of five children, thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great grandchildren. Professionally, he was a highly respected aerospace engineer, mentor, and educator whose contributions shaped the work of countless colleagues and students.
Luke earned his B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from Saint Louis University, an M.S. in Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. He spent over 35 years at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, where he worked across structural analysis, aerodynamics, vibrations, rotordynamics, engine control systems, unsteady aerodynamics, engine controls, space transportation system engineering and integration, and computational fluid dynamics. Throughout his career, he held many prominent positions such as Lead Engineer for the Space Shuttle Main Engine, Chief for Mechanical Systems Branch, Chief of Computational Fluid Dynamics Branch, and Chief Engineer for vehicle integration in heavy-lift launch vehicle development. During his 50 year career he also authored/co-authored numerous publications. A couple of his recognitions include the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the Silver Snoopy Award.
Luke's passion for engineering led him to become an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and later as a contractor with ASRI after retiring from NASA. "Learning comes through the end of a pencil" was one of Luke's life statements which exemplifies how he learned and how he taught. His teaching style and his memorable name are why many of his former students still talk about having him as one of their instructors.
As grandchildren arrived, Luke designed a grandchild magnet in the form of a heated swimming pool. It may have been one of his greatest successes! His grandchildren remember him turning a blind eye whenever they would sneak to turn the pool heater just a little bit warmer.
Luke was well known for cooking ribs and smoking meats; a passion he passed down to his sons. He started work flipping burgers as a teenager and ended with competition style grilling on his Traeger grill. We are all convinced that his ribs were the best.
Luke also had a fun side that showed up in the form of pranks. Many times his participation was not even known due to his unsuspecting, quiet nature and looking innocent in contrast to his wife Karen who was highly suspect for a lot of the Schutzenhofer shenanigans.
Amidst all the playful banter that we still smile about and quote today, Karen had a serious effect on Luke that eventually led him to commit his life to Christ at Southside Baptist Church under the teaching of Dr. Murray Wilton.
Luke is preceded in death by: wife Karen, son Timothy, parents Luke and Rose Schutzenhofer, sisters Pat Switzer (Joe) and Shirley Cygan (Jack), nephew Ricky Switzer.
Luke is survived by: children Rana McClelland, Luke Schutzenhofer (Tammy), Scott Schutzenhofer (Vivian Stooke), Lisa Dodd (Jimmy); grandchildren : Ashley Johnson (Matt), Austin McClelland (Bobbie), Christine McClelland; Jayna Frank (Collin), Katie Kloss (Tom), Molly Middleton (Joe), Lydia Schutzenhofer; Samantha Bivens (Max), Alli Lane (Bobby); Liberty Adams (Zach), Melody Hoernschemeyer (Zach), Dustin Dodd (Ashlynn), Brennen Dodd (Abigail); and twenty-one great grandchildren.
