Lynda Louise Johnston, 78, of Madison, AL, passed away on May 19, 2026.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Frieda Johnston, and her husband, Joseph W. Hackett. She is survived by her brother, Paul Ray Johnston II, her cousins Le Sabre Hoit, Fred Johnston, and Connie Barnett, as well as numerous other relatives.
She was a highly educated woman who graduated from the University of Tennessee in Martin and Knoxville. Lynda was a metallurgical Engineer; her career included work with Union Carbide, Lockheed Martin, and NASA. Early in life, she was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, participating in various training programs and assisting in activities such as flight training and the search and rescue of downed civilian aircraft. She worked for Lockheed Martin for over three decades, working as a metallurgist and Engineering Manager. She worked on projects related to the NASA Space Shuttle program. She has worked on various teams throughout her career, developing materials for projects such as the Space Shuttle thermal protection system, and she also managed the team inspecting and validating all welds of the Space Shuttle external fuel tank after the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster. She and a few associates at Lockheed Martin were inventors awarded a US patent for a Method for the repair of welds made in Aluminum-Lithium alloys.
She was a member of Daughters of the King, a religious service organization in the Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Optimists Club and served on many community Boards.
Lynda was known for her generosity, doing many good deeds anonymously.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. Johnston will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 1:00 pm, at Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church in Madison, Alabama. A reception will follow.
