Obituary

Martha Woodson Bowman Miller, born on December 14, 1955, in Harriman, Tennessee, and passed away in Huntsville, Alabama, on December 22, 2025. Those who knew Martha will remember her as creative, spirited, and deeply caring — a person whose love for family, animals, and the natural world shaped every part of her life.

Martha's early years in Harriman were filled with open air and imagination. She spent much of her childhood outdoors, exploring, sketching, and caring for the animals she adored. In 1963, when she was eight, she moved with her family to Huntsville, Alabama, where she attended Mountain Gap Junior High and later Grissom High School, graduating in 1973. During those years, she grew into her independent spirit — learning music, pursuing art, and discovering the quiet strength and compassion that would come to define her.

Her love of learning and creativity led her to Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colorado, where she studied art and graduated Cum Laude in 1985. She participated in archaeological fieldwork and worked as a college radio DJ, reflecting both her curiosity about the world and her instinctive sense of expression. After college, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she began a career in hospitality and, through friends, met Anthony Miller. They later married and settled in Parker, Colorado.

On April 13, 1992, Martha welcomed her son, Austin Jon Miller, into the world. Austin was the center of her life and the source of her greatest joy. She became an art teacher at his elementary school so she could remain closely involved in his daily life — encouraging creativity, showing up fully, and loving him more than all the stars combined. She also treasured time spent with her family at their cabin in Grand Lake and when Austin began playing hockey, she joined a team herself — a small but perfect reflection of her spirit: determined, playful, and unafraid.

Animals were drawn to Martha in the way people were — naturally and without hesitation. She especially loved her horses and dogs, caring for them with patience and tenderness. Her connection to nature was also tied to her Cherokee heritage, which she carried with quiet pride and reverence.

Family remained at the heart of Martha's life. She shared a close and enduring bond with her siblings and cherished her extended family, including her many nieces and nephews. Her loyalty ran deep, and her love was steady and sure.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jane Baker Bowman and Thomas Franklin Bowman. Martha is lovingly survived by her husband, Anthony Miller; her son, Austin Miller, and his wife, Ashley; and her siblings, Paddy Baker Bowman, Mary Ann (Mike) Chalk, and Thomas Baker Bowman.

She is also cherished in memory by her in-laws, Jan (Jeff Rich) Miller and Allen (Linda) Miller; and by her nieces and nephews: Elizabeth (Zack) Apoian, Katie (Adam) Richard, Anna (Anthony) Roth, Caitlin (Samir) Sabharwal, David Bowman, Jack Bowman, Adam (Amanda) Miller, Andrew (Megan) Miller, Lindsey (Matt) Talafuse, Hannah (Eugene) Wu, and Max (Isabella) Rich.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha's memory may be made to the Nature & Wildlife Discovery Center, honoring her lifelong love for animals and the outdoors .

Martha will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, gentle humor, and the deep devotion she held for her family — especially her beloved son.
