Mary Terry Graham: A Life of Faith, Grace and the "Rocket City" Spirit
HUNTSVILLE, AL — Mary Terry Graham (nee Rodgers), a woman whose life mirrored the transformation of her beloved Huntsville from a quiet cotton town into a gateway to the stars, went home to be with her Lord on December 30, 2025, in Auburn, Alabama. She was 86.
Mary Terry Rodgers Graham lived a life that bridged two very different Alabamas. Mary Terry entered life in a Huntsville with fewer than 20,000 people. She grew up in the shadow of Monte Sano, graduating from Huntsville High School before the "Space Race" would forever alter the skyline of her youth. As a young woman, she stood at the heart of that history, supporting her late husband, Ronald J. Graham, Sr., as he began a distinguished career at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in the late 1950s and later founded the Computer Science program at Athens State University. While he worked to help astronauts reach the moon, Mary Terry served as the family's spiritual and emotional compass.
A Legacy of Intellect and Service
Mary Terry's life was defined by a rare harmony of "head and heart." She was a woman of culture who found God in the soaring arias of the opera and the complexities of the humanities. Yet, her service was grounded in the practical needs of her community. She spent over 20 years as a dedicated Red Cross volunteer and served with deep compassion as the school nurse at University Place School, where she was a comforting presence for generations of Huntsville's children.
Her own academic journey was a testament to her lifelong curiosity. After graduating from the University of North Alabama, she later earned a Master of Arts in Christian Counseling from Heritage University. This education fueled her leadership as President of the Women's Aglow Huntsville Chapter, where she mentored countless women in their walks of faith.
The Language of the Soul
While she spent many years as a member of First United Methodist Church, Mary Terry's spiritual journey led her to a profound "born again" experience. At Faith Chapel Pentecostal Church, her devotion found a unique and powerful expression: she mastered American Sign Language, providing simultaneous translations of church services so that the Word of God could be felt and seen by all. Whether teaching Sunday School or interpreting a sermon with her hands, she dedicated her life to ensuring no one was excluded from the message of hope and grace.
A Mother to Pioneers
Perhaps her greatest masterpiece was the family she nurtured. She took immense pride in the brilliance of her children, particularly her late son, Dr. Stephen Emerson Graham, whose gifts in mathematics led him from Huntsville to a PhD at Yale University and a career as a leading computer scientist in a major software company. She was the quiet strength behind a family of scholars and innovators, teaching them that the pursuit of knowledge was a way to honor the Creator. Her other children have successful careers in public service, computer science and marketing.
Survivors and Remembrance
Mary Terry was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald J. Graham, Sr. and her children, Stephen Emerson and Martha Elizabeth.
She is survived by her sister, Alice Rodgers Rice; her children: Mary Catherine (Scott), Ronald Jonathan Jr. (Ilija) and David Andrew (Shu Lin) and her niece Brenda Graham Eubanks (Linn). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Andrew Chen, Elizabeth Ann and Rebecca Mae; and her two great-grandchildren, Hannah Elaine and Mary Elizabeth.
In the symphony of her life, the final movement was one of peace, surrounded by the family she loved and the God she served.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 3rd, from 10:00-11:00 AM at Faith Chapel, with a funeral service immediately following.
