Obituary

Born the first of ten children to Leo and Ethel Dahlenburg, in Keystone South Dakota, Peggy's childhood home was a small house in the hills near what would become the Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. The house was close enough in fact that rocks from the blasting for the monument were known to rain down on it. As a young girl of fifteen she moved out of the family home and went to work at a restaurant and grocery store to support herself, living in a room rented from a local family. Her sense of responsibility and determination stayed with her to the end. But it was her compassion, love and generosity that were her defining characteristics.

Marrying a young Airman, John D. Burris, in 1956, her life expanded well beyond her humble beginnings. Together John and Peggy started a family and worked multiple jobs and businesses to provide for them. The children were blessed to have a mother who not only loved and cared for them well, but also lived a life which modeled faith, joy, service, kindness, commitment, persistence and creativity. Her faithful support and love for her parents, and siblings Phyllis, Dean, Larry, Fred, Judy, Frank, Patti, Wanda and Rodney, continued throughout her life. Her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren were a source of much joy to Peggy and found her home a warm and fun place to be. She had a delightful sense of humor, laughed easily and was known to be mischievous and playful around them.

A life-long learner, saver, and Christian, Peggy earned her GED and a college degree after her own children were in high school. Some of her other interests and talents included oil painting, piano, guitar, private pilot, flower arranging and bookkeeping. She served in any church she was a part of in many aspects including, pianist, Sunday school teacher, Altar guild, women's ministry and more. But her service did not end at the church doors. Many times she was known to stop and help someone on the side of the road, "adopt" a person in need by helping with food, clothing, medical care or simply spending time listening or in prayer. Often these things were not known to her family except coincidentally. Peggy lived out her faith and never forgot her own roots.  She and John were also foster parents for a time. She was a friend and encourager to many, her life was very impactful on the world around her and she will be greatly missed!

Peggy is survived by her husband John D. Burris, children John M. Burris, Donna Carter (Dale), and Matthew Burris; grandchildren Jason Burris (Treeva), Diana Lindsey (Tim), Laura Burris, Christine Patterson (Scott), Lindsey Kitchen (Jake), David Parden, Jeffrey Carter (Nycole), Pat Carter (Kristine); 21 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. And by her brothers Fred (Camille), Larry and Rodney Dahlenburg, and sisters Patti Meidinger and Wanda Jorgenson.

Flowers are welcome or if you prefer she would be delighted for the support of a ministry or donation to Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center or Alzheimer's/Dementia Rese
