Robert Earl
Albright, Sr.
April 9, 1936 – November 27, 2023
Former Alabama State Representative, whose work was integral in Huntsville's compliance to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Robert "Bob" Albright, Sr. of Huntsville, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Florence on November 27, 2023, leaving a legacy of public service. A native of Paint Rock Valley and son of the late Raymond Albright and Mabel Ramsey, Robert graduated from Central High School and Athens State University. Robert attended college on the GI Bill after his service in the United States Air Force where he represented the Air Force Falcons in the National Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Joan Hall, and his brother Senator Ray Albright of Tennessee. His family includes his sons Robert Albright, Jr. and Joseph Albright and daughter Cherise Albright; his nine grandchildren: Jeremy Connell (Katherine), Robert Albright, III, Jack "Spritely" Albright, Ian Albright, Zoe Albright Maddox, Sadie Albright, Sarah Albright, Gus Albright, and Quinn Albright Maddox; brother Mark Albright (Karen); and great grandson Robert James. And, he was "Pop" to so many in the family and their friends.
A talented athlete in boxing, track, football, and basketball, Robert worked as a coach, Biology teacher and vocational counselor for 25 years while concurrently serving in the Alabama State Legislature for 12 years. He was proud to be elected as a delegate to the 1984 Democratic National Convention. Additionally, he served on numerous committees in the Alabama Legislature, leaving his influence and passion for equity in the Code of Alabama. Robert continued to work long after his retirement, learning to build engines with Howard Cagle and stirring political debate among his peers at their daily breakfast meeting at Hardee's in Five Points. He was proud to speak to local Scout groups about citizenship and government.
Robert's life and accomplishments were deep and varied. His family remembers him as a passionate, curious, adventurous story-teller who loved being surrounded by his grandchildren. He delighted in recounting tales of sneaking onto his grandfather's wagon to catch a ride to town; being a boy in Mobile during World World 2 seeing sacks of flour dropped over the city in air raid practices; playing baseball against the Joliet Prison team; boxing with an opponent who lost his glass eye during the match as well as adventures like riding motorcycles to Mexico. His family will miss his sense of humor, magnanimous spirit and dedication to equality and justice.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 5 at 12 pm. Services will be at 2 pm. Burial at Trenton Cemetery following. Berryhill Funeral Home is assisting the family.
